I have a 2009 corolla and about the change coolant for first time. It has pink from factory, I have a gallon of Toyota red left over from an older Toyota. I assume I will be okay to drain (not flush) and refill with 50/50 red and distilled water?

ok, thanks.....I have been reading conflicting reports.... but according to Toyota they are interchangeable. I still have about 1 gallon of red left (50/50) and I need to do my 07 Tundra w/ 50k for first coolant change, drain & fill. It came with pink, I was just going to buy three gallons of Zerex Asian and use Toyota red to top off rest (capacity is 13.7 qts)

ok, so new question.... It looks like they sell concentrate red by OEM brand (not Toyota) ay pep boys and it says good for 5yrs or 150k. Can I use this with distilled water instead of the zerex premix pink that costs twice as much?

Pep Boys OEM Brand Concentrate, unlike Toyota Red LL, is a long service interval PHOAT AF. It has the longer service interval of the current PHOATS like Toyota SLL pink that only come as a premix, but comes as full strength. It's the only concentrated PHOAT I'm aware of that actually states the longer service interval on the jug and pds/sds. The 150k miles seems optimist, imo. More like ~5 years, 50-60k miles, which is about what the vehicles manufacturers recommend on subsequent to FF interval.
So if you can find it, use it. Seems to be getting more difficult to find at PBs.

I know more then a few certified Lexus mechanics that prefer Toyota red over the pink...
I went from red to pink in my 2002 Tacoma. My mechanic did this for me when he replaced my radiator, and I am OK with it. My wife's 2012 Highlander uses the pink, so I'm all for reducing the number of fluids I keep in the garage. I'm not sure I'd go from pink back to red in a vehicle that came with pink simply because the service life for red is so much shorter. But that's just me. If you prefer to flush every 2 years it is probably just fine.
Toyota LL Pink is rated for 120K miles, its best you stick with OEM fluid.
When I drained and filled my Highlander after 140K (replaced the belt and pump with the dealership), it was pink as new.
It is a terrific sauce and conservatively last 120K

Why is that ? How can the mechanics really know - on a scientific basis ?
