Toyota oil filters

Please everybody, cut me some slack here. I'm nothing more than a " burnout" High School Graduate from smack in the middle of the GREAT 80's. I had tons of fun, and had to go to summer school in my senior year to get my diploma. Then from there, 6 months later, I was diggin ditches for Con-Ed Utility Company of NY installing gas lines,,,having more tons of fun. I fried my brain !!!! ( no needles..scared me because of the whole AIDS thing " You name it, I did it, and enjoyed it. A LOT of my old friends are dead now because of our " enjoyment". I'm a self taught mechanic. Trial and error. I don't understand 1/10th of the stuff you guys know. So be it. I try to use OEM filters and fluids, when my wallet lets me, because that's what the stupid book in the glove box says. It's that simple. I'm slowly learning all these different terms that are used. I had no idea " PD" means positive displacement when it comes to an oil pump. Now I do.

I've been reading up on Toyota and Honda filters, and it does seem that online amateur materials scientists turn their noses up at them on occasion.

At the same time, no one can point to consistent failure of OEM oil filters in either Honda blue cans or Toyota black Densos.

Toyota filters are $5 from the dealer, why use anything else?

I have been learning, as a " noob", there are vast difference's in oil filter's media make up, efficiency ratings, etc.. Never knew it existed..Glad I came to BITOG...a place to learn, and hear all sorts of opinions. Never in my widest dreams would I have thought to open up a used oil filter and do such in depth testing on it. For that I am grateful. IF I would ever get a car worthy of such tremendous treatment, I would go with the high end filters. I own beaters, a 13' CRV, 06' Camry, 03'Solara. 3k oil changes. OEM or less is good enough for me. Now, I do know to look at the louvers now to make sure they are open, or check for other imperfections, thanks to BITOG members. I'm a stickler on 3k oil changes. The cars are not used much. Stop and go, bopping around town, few romps on the highway. Personally, I believe that leads to sludge due to engine not being run at operating temps for long periods, so I dump the oil and filter @ 3k. I've done BG 109's in all of them a few times already to stay ahead of the 8 ball. If I ever hit Lotto, and buy my dream car, only the best will be poured in the block. Until then, it's OEM in bulk, aftermarket bulk on sale, and always 20k oil. Wally World is always running sales on oil. I have stashes of filters and oil. Currently enough to last me years. I thank you all for your help / input. I have learned a lot.

Apply the same reasoning to Toyota oil

I have a few random thoughts rattling around in my head after reading all these posts. None of which, I am quite certain, matter.
1.) I appreciate all the technical testing and analysis that has been done. I really do. However, how much does any of that matter in the real world? As a few have questioned here, I echo: Can anyone, ever, point to an example of excessive engine wear or failure due to using an OEM filter that allowed too many dirt particles to stay in the oil?
2.) What are great quality, affordable oil filters right now? It seems like every day there are new posts on here of C&P showing this filter or that filter is junk due to poor quality construction, materials, etc.
3.) I don't think that all Toyota engines use a PD oil pump. I am pretty sure, for example, the 2.5L in late-model Camery and RAV4 are some sort of variable displacement and/or flow design.
4.) Back to point number 2 from above, one filter that the in-crowd on here is using right now is CQ Premium/Blue. I changed oil on my old Explorer last weekend, so I thought I would try one. I didn't know they are made in Vietnam now. At least the one I bought was. Must be the "same" as a Micro guard Select from O-R? Had I known that I would not have bought it. Is it a great filter? Maybe. For me personally, however (just my own opinion), I am not interested in supporting a communist nation. I have recently been buying a few more OEM Toyota filters. All the ones that I have bought are made in Thailand. Is supporting Thailand better than supporting Vietnam? I really don't know. At least it is not openly outright communist.
5.) I buy OEM Toyota filters at the dealer. Not out of the way for me. Quite a bit cheaper than WM.

Variable displacement oil pumps are still PD oil pumps. I'd venture to say every engine built in at least in the last 75 years have used a PD oil pump ... maybe ever since engines were invented.

Knowing that every wear study shows that better filtration means cleaner oil, which then results in less wear, then everyone will just have to decide for themselves what they think is enough oil filtration efficiency. Of course we are talking about possible noticeable wear difference over the long run, not between two consecutive OCIs. Just like using one oil viscosity vs another could result in less wear over the long run. But one thing is for sure, if a high efficiency filter is used then you don't have to guess if the lower efficiency filter isn't making any difference or not. Just like going up an oil grade from xW-20 to xW-30 gives more confidence that there is more wear protection and less wear over the long run from a thicker MOFT between moving parts.

I don't disagree one bit.
Serious question: So, what reasonably priced, readily available oil filter is great right now?
Again, all I see on here is: all Fram are junk now, all Wix are junk now, all Purolator are junk now, etc., etc.

Sort of, it's easier to find and buy equivalent or better oil for less.

I don't know of any aftermarket filters that are equivalent in quality and cheaper than the Toyota Denso ones.

Not for me. I haven't really found cheaper oil. I stock up during the 25% off online sales events that my local Toyota dealers run multiple times per year (usually around holidays). I just checked my last invoice - I paid $3.03 per quart (Toyota genuine 5w30).

Many here are going with the PGI made, extended filters like Premium Guard, Carquest Premium, STP XL, Micorgard Select and some NAPA Gold filters (some are still M+H). The supplier of the Mobil 1 filter changed recently (from M+H to Highline Warren) for the better construction quality. Some don't like where they're made, so they go with others. Some like "looks", some like performance (efficiency and up to miles use), some like construction quality and some like all of the factors involved. People buy the products they do based on many reasons, rightly so since it's their money. Oil filters change constantly, and the discussions here tries to keep up. So with all that discussion anyone who reads this forum enough should know that latest popular filters based on the info about them, and the added C&Ps of the visual construction quality is a factor for many.

Yeah, that's the problem. You don't know who is making what anymore. Too many chef's in the kitchen....but I do believe the bean counters have EVERYTHING to do with this problem, like everything else. It all boils down to $$$$$$......
