Toyota oil consumption failure

I’d be willing to bet that quote is for sending the head out for reconditioning unless the valve stem seals are ungodly expensive from Toyota.

Labor to remove the head would be included in the pistons, but not the labor to disassemble the head/cams/springs...

If you do the stem seals later, the head may have to come off again...

So the question becomes - what are the chances that it will need valve stem seals over the live of the car if not replaced now... my money would be on “unlikely" but I’m not familiar with that particular engine...

i think you can bargain more.

The first offer from the dealer even though they said reduced is still going to be close to book price. you probably can get 30%more off.
If you didn't do it and came back on another day without the other work you'd probably get quoted the same price.

I wouldn't call it double dipping necessarily.
you have to keep the perspective that the whole billing for auto repair goes by book and the services performed not by actual time spent. a locksmith charges you 150 to open your door in 2min, it's the service thst you're paying for not the labor.

maybe what you can bargain for is a free future oil change too or something simple like that....

I'm just trying to figure out how an almost 10yr/old vehicle qualified for an oil consumption test in the first place.

Toyota gave a "Warranty Enhancment" on the 2AZ-FE engine due to excessive oil consumption. I think it is 10 years from date of first use or 150,000 miles.
I don't remember exactly what years are in the warranty though. My Scion is not covered in this warranty though. I think it was in the xB till 2011, even though my '12 has the same motor, and I have heard mixed if the issue was fixed by the time mine was made (late 2012). No oil usage so far, but most don't start having issues till at least 45,000-60,000 miles.

You might want to know that your 2012 xB is covered, as are all second gen xB's through the final 2015 model year. 10 years or 150k miles from first date of service. The warranty enhancement was extended. So even 2008 Scion xB's are still on the warranty extension, if they're under 150k miles. Until Oct. 2016, they were offering it even on xB2's over 150k miles.

Toyota isn't going to notify anyone about that. You had to dig through the NHSTA Manufacturers communications. For some reason, NHTSA has recently locked down the contents on those doc's and now wants a "research fee" to read them! Tax dollars at work. I believe it's NHTSA ID Number: 10091611, Manufacturer Communication Number: POL14-12.

Head is going to be off when they do the rebuild which is part of the warranty work. Way too much money just for valve seals. Find a local automotive machine shop, and have them change the valve seals.

The piston ring replacement on the 2AZ-FE is strictly that - there's no head work involved. This is a 4-6 hr job at the dealer (and I've confirmed this with my local friends who have done this job).

Hmm, never seen anything saying past 2011 for the xB, but good to know. Thanks.
At less than 10,000 miles a year, we still have 5.5 years to watch for it.
Hopefully it's diet of syn oil (first 4 changes were with TGMO at the dealer) and 5000 mile oil changes will keep it from being an issue.
As said, so far so good, but still way under the mileage this usually begins at.

Save your money and only have them do what's covered under warranty.

Chances are they will send the head out to have any additional work done on it anyway. If you were to take the head to a machine shop, the cost to have it completely reconditioned would be well under $690.

Reminds me of the time I took my 50k mile car in to have the clutch throw-out bearing changed under warranty. Dealer said the factory would pay for a new pressure plate R&R if I paid for the disc R&R which I was quoted $225 for. I thought that might include a flywheel surfacing but it didn't. I went right to the parts counter and was quoted $60 for the part and we all know there is no additional work to change a disc once the pressure plate comes off.

I've said it before, dealers can practically give cars away because they'll bend you over when it comes to service.
