My Scion Xb failed its warranty enhancement oil consumption test and Toyota will be replacing the piston, piston rings and related components at no cost. The dealer doing the work is offering/recommending additional services be done at a "reduced" price. They want $880 to replace the valve seals, spark plugs, water pump, PCV valve. I have previously replaced all but the valves seals and they are offering to do the work for $690. I am wondering if it is worth the cost for them do it or if it is a waste of money. Never had an issue with valve seals, so I am not sure what the chances are that it fails.

I would pass. if all those need replaced they should be doing it for free under warranty too.
Are they just trying to tack on minimal labor work while its apart or is there some basis for this work?

i wouldn't let them do anything but warranty work, but thats me.
It's a good idea to replace many of those parts... But you already replaced them. I'd pass.
Thermostat is another good one.
Also, their prices are outrageous since it should only be parts cost.
I am about to fail a consumption test on my Equinox. Has 62k on it. I plan to buy the thermostat and water pump and simply have them swap it.
Valve seals are different, they won't be touching them to do piston and rings....I don't think anyways. Maybe have them check the valve seals? Also check for carbon buildup on the back of the valves?

Are you saying the valve seals are 690? Are they just changing valve seals or sending the head out and having it surfaced, valves lapped and seals changed?
No on the valve seals. Everything else should be parts costs only since most of those parts are removed to do the engine overhaul. When I worked at the dealer, we'd charge a half hour labor to do plugs & PCV since those don't get removed normally doing the bottom end rebuild.
What is warranty enhancement oil test? Also I am surprised it's still under warranty .it a Toyota .top gear show tried one time to kill a pickup from Toyota . In insanelly extreme harsh way of driving . Last I checked it was on display on the wall of fame of top gear .it still run .it is but ugly everything was done to lol . Anyway next time gas with zero% ethanol change gas filter . Put new volvoline conventional oil or total classic (the recommended weight and your car should be fine .like I said its a Toyota .unless you race the thing all the thing you mentioned wouldn't change much the behavior in oil consumption of a Toyota. Ethanol in gas for most old car shouldn't be in the tank in more then 2% concentration .most put 15 % .i m sure if you find the updated car manual it mention gas only .this mean no ethanol in gas

Yeah, the Toyota service department only exists for customers that come in for oil changes and brake pads since nothing else ever goes wrong with them.

Head is going to be off when they do the rebuild which is part of the warranty work. Way too much money just for valve seals. Find a local automotive machine shop, and have them change the valve seals.
