Well, let's see:

1. Unusual engine architecture: check
2. Uber safe vehicles: check
3. Conservative (almost bland) styling: check
4. Reputation for reliability: check
5. Low market penetration: check

You might be right! Lol, Subaru = the new Volvo

I bought a 2010 Prius based on the opinions and ownership experience of other Generation one and two Prius owners.

So far not one issue with the car in the first three months I have owned it. Time will tell as the years and miles add up if I made the right decision switching from Volvo's to Toyota's.

BTW The newer Volvo's are no where near the quality that the old RWDs were. The last great Volvo's were the 1995-1998 960's and S90's.

Actually, you're right. I had to talk myself down several months ago when a local Volvo dealer had a 2009 S60 in silver with the optional wheels and trim packages, full leather, marked down from 36K to 26K including a huge rebate from Volvo. It was pretty sharp. I kind of wanted it.

Go back to the early 80s when I bought my Volvo 240. Volvo and "bland" were synonymous back then.

I am a truck driver and have personally seen two Toyota Sequoias and a Nissan Pathfinder (previous style, not the newest one) in rollovers and the roof was crushed all the way down to the doors. The entire w/s pillar collapsed too. I trust my life to GM's engineering in my Impala and Chevy p/u as well as driving sensibly. Toyota and imports in general are overpriced hype.

*Waits for the Toyota fanboys to show up with the pitchforks......

While it is good to be safe, the IIHS (an insurance industry lobbying group as well) has a goal that at some future date that insururers NEVER pay out on a claim, ever!

I don't pay much mind to much of what the IIHS does or says.

If the insurance industry has their way all of us will be driving airbags on wheels!

I'm not interested.

If the car is good with REASONABLE safety as outlined by DOT, I'm pretty happy.

I'm NOT a yota fan either. I'm just tired of certain entities being looked at as "gospel" in the auto industry. Whether JD Power, IIHS, or that stupid consulting agency that seems to be the last word in the auto industry. I forget their name right now.

A lot of the people on the road at that time are intoxicated.

I do. I could be in an accident where the car rolls over on its roof. I would rather not be crushed.

You could too. It does not matter if your daily commute is 500 miles in rush hour traffic or 15 miles at midnight.

Most people are in accidents by circumstances not choice. That is why they call them accidents.

That would be a fantastic day. No need for insurance.I would cancel my insurance right away.

I do.

Because it is another source of information. If two cars are equal in everything else and one is significantly safer then that is the one I am going to buy.

Evidently you pay enough attention to read and post in this thread.

I am interested. If two cars are equal in everything eles and one is REASONABLY SAFE by DOT standards and another is meets those standards and exceeds them to meet IIHS standards then that is the one I am going to buy.

And I would add that in my late 2002 Camry, I got T-Boned on the driver's side by a Tahoe doing 40 mph (per it's driver's admission, physical evidence confirmed).

I'm alive and well.

Any questions?

Whatever. . .

That's good to hear since my sister drives around in our mom's 2004 Camry.

Toyota is learning the lesson GM did. You can build 1-4million cars almost perfectly. Once you build more than 5 million units you start to compromise quality by the sheer size of the company. When you hit 8 million+ the left hand no longer knows what the right hand is doing and you have to rely way too much on the integrity of the suppliers you have bashed to death the previous year. SO, the wheels start falling off...literally in some cases. Toyota has definitely slipped down the slope. But statistically speaking they still make a good vehicle. Plus their customer service is excellent in comparison.

However, I do think Ford will pass them by in overall vehicle quality, style and reliability in the next 3 years. If this happens then my driveway will be full of Fords.

Buying Toyota was smart, but in 90's, now it's an overpriced appliance.

You're right. My beloved Toyotas all had VINs that began with the letter "J". (Japanese produced). The Toyotas produced in North America just don't have that Japanese "feel", fit, finish and quality control. Toyota's heydays were probably 1980 to 1995. Once you're on top, there's no place to go but down.
The mid-90s Avalons were excellent, economical, superbly reliable cars, made in Kentucky.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toyota customer service is the worst in the business. My 2008 Sienna experience was the absolute worst experience I could imagine at the dealer/manufacturer level.

I traded mine while waiting on call back number 2678 (just joking but you get the point) and have never heard from them again after a 3 month ordeal with a broken seat that Toyota would NOT repair/replace because they "don't kknow what is wrong with it". Toyota USA=useless. Happily back to Ford.
