Beginning 2027 the Toyota Highlander will only be available in an all electric model - only the Grand Highlander will be available with a gas engine . *I think it is a bad decision to have the more popular , smaller Highlander only be available as an all electric ( not even a hybrid available !) … The Grand Highlander is too large for my needs and the RAV 4 is too small , so if you want the Highlander sized SUV you either have to buy used OR look at a similar sized SUV from other manufacturers which most likely are not as good as the Highlander drive train . Your thoughts on the Highlander only being available as all electric beginning 2027 ?

As an owner of two hybrids I cannot understand why they would go all electric. The Rav4 and Maverick are awesome hybrids IMO and I am not sure I would like an all electric vehicle.

Highlander is far from being as popular as Grand Highlander. Far from it.

If the sales tank, they will bring back the gas version. It;s pretty much guaranteed. Even the mighty Toyota needs to move metal.

Toyota sold 56,000 Highlanders in 2025 but almost 137,000 Grand Highlanders.

Kia is on track to move about 12,000 EV9's this year. Toyota moved 15,000 BZ's last year. I wonder if Toyota plans to turn the Highlander into a niche vehicle; after all, it isn't exactly size competitive with the rest of the 3 row market.

Wow - thanks , I would not have thought the Grand Highlander would sell so many units ?!
Highlander came 3-4rs before GHL. So, you might see them more.
It was a dud. Toyota approached that segment thinking it can invest as least as possible, offering small package and people will buy it just because it is Toyota.
Kia/Hyundai killed it, Honda, even VW gained traction with Atlas.
Then they scrambled to get GHL out. It definitely feels like product that was afterthought compared to competitors. But it is Toyota, people will buy it.
So, I guess they have to find appt for Highlander. Has the name recognition, so that helps.

I think they cut manufacturing of the regular Highlander and pushed the more expensive Grand Highlander.

All sounds reasonable - thanks . I’ll look around at other similar size SUV’s to the standard Highlander that still sit up higher (like an SUV should IMO).

Dang I’m a Toyota tech and even I had no idea the Grand Highlander outsold the Highlander which is weird because we see and work on so many more Highlanders and the Grand Highlander seems like maybe 6 or 7 a week that we see tops. I also just see so many more Highlanders.

As for them going all electric it’s absolutely ridiculous and not smart on their part and I think they will learn that really quick.

Two things:
1. Highlander was on the market since 2021. GHL 2024. So let’s assume total number of Highlanders is higher.
2. They have more miles as a result being longer on the market, hence, more need to service.

Nah. Highlander was a dud. Really not competitive size wise in that family SUV segment.
GHL was response to market behavior which Toyota missed with regular Highlander.
