Toyota and rust part II

Rust ruined my parents perfectly running/problem free 89 Toyota 4x4 PU to where it was uninspectable and not worth repairing.

The jist is original owners of 1995-2000 Tacoma's have frame warranty against rust. If severe they repair it or buyback at 1.5 KBB retail on the truck.

Toy's have always been known to have bodies that fall off way before anything happens to the drivetrain. Sad really...

Same thing in my area. Very rare to see a small Toyota p/u ~4-5yrs old without major rust. Same thing with Nissan P/Us. The advent of the T-100 and then Tundra seems to have changed things.

Its getting later than you think. Toyota had a problem with pick-up bodies prior to the TACOMA series (1995). They had a LAP JOINT weld over the rear wheels (probably to save $)and this joint collected moisture and rot ensued rather quickly. This was... the only rot on the truck, however! Sadly, this highly visible rust prevented me and many others from pursuing a Toyota. I quizzed a salesman on it he said it is one of the most asked questions even though the problem is over a decade old.

The T-100s rust like crazy here also. I have a friend with a 2003 Tacoma and it is rusting on the bumpers a lot. Surprising for any make.

Too bad GM doesn't do this for the leaking intake manifold gaskets.

This rust problem goes back into the 80's a good friend of mine bought a new toy-PU in the mid 80's I don't recall just what year it was but that thing rusted out really bad.
The payments nearly lasted longer than the truck.

I'd rather repair a LIM leak then deal with frame rot any day.

I had an '81 Toy 4X4, it lived on the TX coast. I was in the dealer to get my 3rd trans rebuild (the first gen L52 5 spd)and the service writer noticed some rust on my wheel wells on the bed. He said,"Let's take care of that while it's in here." I got a new bed but it only lasted 3 years before I had to fix it. Even the full box frames on those trucks would rust through unless you drilled drain holes along the bottom of them.

Most of you guys are talking about body rust. Toyota is talking about rust thru the frame.

Check ou the rear bumpers of some newer modle dodges ,if you live in the rust belt.they look like sives.

Yes but it all amounts to the same thing the vehicles is junk in a few short years.

Hate to tell you, but the problem resides in the Tundra, too. Do some reading on tundrasolutions.com or edumund.com. Numerous mentions of 2000 models w/ frame rot. I am amazed that Toyota has stepped up to the plate, though.

They've certainly taken some dings in their armour as of late .... sludge issues, 07 Toyota trans & camshaft issues, new Camry issues, and now this rust issue.

That comment on box frames is right on, I had a mazda cursed with this. Rotted from inside out. On mazda it was in front of the rear wheel arches. They put a drain hole in but it wasn't big enough; filled with crud.

A channel frame starts out twice as thick but rust only eats half the area so years away it's still got enough to get by. Plus the mud and salt rinses out naturally.

19 years is not that bad really for new england. s10s are sagging on their cab mounts by their 10th birthdays, quite often.
