Toyota air filter

I changed the air filter on my wife's 2003 Toyota Corolla with 91,000 miles. We bought the car last month and don't know much about the maintenance history. I used a filter from the Toyota dealer, it said Denso on the box, made in the U.S.A. The filter I took out had a black rubber gasket around the edge of the filter, no markings on the filter. The Denso did not have a gasket. It did not appear to need one but I am wondering, why was the rubber gasket on the old filter?
Does anyone have any experience in this matter? Comments?

The put the gasket on there to seal. Fram does it on the dirty air side and Toyota OEM (and every one I've seen so far from a dealership) have the full wraparound rubber gasket like you describe.

Here is a thread about issues I had with WIX filters I bought. I did not and will not use filters that will not seal on the filter box. (unless the factory has a o ring or some type of gasket permilty on the box).

In my Corolla I've used a few filters in the 212k miles I've had it. All of my SI counts have been very good with Frams or the filters with gaskets.

Nice little cars, the '06 we have has served us well. I use Fram air filters in both of our Toyotas, I wouldn't use a filter w/o a gasket personally.

Since you don't know the maintenance history, you might also think about a transmission fluid and coolant change, check the spark plugs, etc.

Yeah, I changed the transmission fluid last week, four quarts of Toyota T-IV fluid. Didn't drop the pan, I plan on doing that next summer. Also drained the coolant and replaced it today, with the red antifreeze from the dealer.

AAP has a Driveworks air filter that seals extremely well in the airbox for about $12. Seals better than the Fram or Purolator.

Skip the Toyo fluid and get Amsoil ATF...WAY better shifting, cooler etc...At least in my Lexus's. The new toyo's got cheap on the filter. They WERE stainless steal filters..now paper.
