2017 Highlander 3.5 DI V6, 61K.

Toyota changed the intake plenum design on the DI version. The annoying hangers have been replaced with a small bracket that is near the throttle body area. Intake plenum can be removed in 15 min, entire job can easily be done in under an hour.

They also updated the coil connectors to a more durable design, but the connectors now fit extremely tightly on the coil. You’ll have to use some finesse to remove the coil connector and it can be the most difficult part of the job.

Very nice! And those plugs look pretty decent...what’s the recommendation on the change interval?

I have the engine the year before that (2016), and I’m not looking forward to doing the plugs...I’m at 68,000 miles now...might wait till 120,000.

Much more time consuming job on the port injected engines. Probably do my coolant next year when it reaches 90,000 miles or so. Have done my tranny fluid already.

Toyota specs a 60K interval for the DI V6 engines. Lots of carbon build up on the plugs. #2 was the worst.

Service procedure for the port injected ones is not much different. The “evil hangers” are actually much easier to access on the 2GR engines compared to the older 1MZ. Probably a 1-1.5 hr job, max.

Wow 60k? That does look a little nasty. In my previous DI plug replacements ive seen a lot of oil on the plugs (as I assume it got past the rings and started burning in the cylinder).

These “evil hangers” you mention...is that the two brackets on the back of the manifold?

These are the plugs after 64,000 miles, from my 2018 Sienna. Similar to your experience, the job on the Sienna is straightforward, and doesn't involve the contortions of earlier models. The cowl does have to come off, though.

There's a fellow on Siennachat who still has the original plugs in his 2017 after 425,000 miles. Maybe looks are deceiving. (Yes, that mileage is correct. He has a delivery service. For cadavers!)
