Hello,

Long time lurker, recent registration.

I have a '99 Sienna (bought new) that has seen Castrol Syntec for the 2nd-8th oil changes and Mobil 1 since then (I've lately been using the new EP variety). Anyway, knowing the supposed or real reputation of this engine I have a question about my OCIs.

I keep a spreadsheet with all my changes and right now it is averaging 4808 miles in between. Is this too often? I'd go ahead and have an analysis done but I guess I have a somewhat hard time understanding all those numbers and how they relate to my particular situation. I did replace the front valve cover gasket a few months ago and everything inside was spotless and bright. I'd kind of like to keep it that way if I could. I do use Mobil 1 oil filters so that adds $11 or so to each change.

Just for simplicity I've also been following about the same interval in my 2000 Echo. I'm thinking that on might be OK to let go a few more miles though since it doesn't have a "reputation" like the Sienna.

Thanks for any advice.

I have a Chrysler V6 with a similar reputation for sludge failure. And I too use Mobil 1. You are way ahead of 99% of people already by your knowledge and good maintenance. If the engine looked spotless, I would stick with your regime. If you haven't already, change the PCV (postive crankcase ventilation)valve. It is overlooked by 99% of people and costs less than $10, but it is critical. The Echo could probably go much longer between changes, though.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I do change the PVC valve pretty regularly, at least twice a year.

The more I think about it I believe I will send off a few samples for a UOA. I'd kind of like to see what shows up, if anything. I just need to spend the time figuring out what the analysis means.
