Still, everyone in the industry needs tougher spec, then that make sense. (i.e. API SN, etc)

If only one engine in one manufacture needs one oil that they have to pass emission, fuel economy, or preventing it from blowing up (i.e. Nissan Ester, BMW 10w60, etc), then something is wrong with the engineering.

Universal, common turbo diesel spec or high detergent spec is fine. One off band aid oil is not.

Speaking for the BMW "M". These cars are essentially race cars in a passenger car body and consequently they are driven that way. If an OEM has to spec a special oil for both daily driving and track duty simultaneously(sp?) so be it. I would say these cars are considered special.
