I'm looking at a new Toro single stage snowblower. Are the 4 stroke engines chinese knock-offs or are they Briggs? Toro only says "Toro 4 stroke OHV".

I've had good luck with Briggs over the years, nothing more.
If the engine name is not mentioned you can assume its Chinese.
To answer your question: It's a Chinese engine. I did the research before I purchased one. a "Loncin" 168cc
I was originally gonna purchase a new leftover Toro with the R-Tek 2 cycle engine. but I truly am tired of mixing oil and gas and smelling the exhaust. They seem to be a decent engine with 2 caveats: the cheap spark plug (Torch) which can easily be replaced with a Champion or NGK - and the carbs are a little finicky - so make sure you prep the machine for summer storage. (draining the carb is preferred)

Ditto Quattro's comments. The Briggs on mine has been flawless. I have a Techumseh on my snowblower, a Briggs on my Lawnmower, and a Honda on my pressure washer. They all work very well.

This is exactly why my Wife wants me to get rid of my CCR2000. I might try some Klotz 2 cycle oil to see if it smells any better.

I had reservations about getting my Toro 221qe 2 stroke, but after using it I wouldn't go back to a 4 stroke for a snowblower.
As far as the smell, I have dedicated snow removal outdoor clothes (ski jacket and ski pants) that I wear over my regular clothes so any smell doesn't get on my clothes.
Mixing oil and gas isn't that big of a deal.

Working for Sears Delivery now, instead of Plumbing, Ive gotten 2 killer snowblowers in the past couple of weeks customers wanted disposed when they got their New ones, and they both Run like CHAMPS!. The Craftsman 33" dual stage 12.5 Hp Briggs with 6 forward/2Reverse speed for the 24" Tracks runs like a CHAMP, but needs angle Iron for re-enforcement from the frame to blower housing. The Craftsman 22"/5 hP Tecumseh runs like a even Better CHAMP and only had Both belts slip off their pulleys. A ten minute fix, and Shes throwin Washington snow like crazy this week.

You can definitely improve the situation with tuning and better 2-cycel oil, but you're still going to get much more raw fuel out the exhaust of a 2-stroke no matter what you do.
