Top Tier Detergent Gasoline

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is a recently established new standard for gasoline performance. Four of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.

Great standard, unfortunatly there is none in my town. Sonoco, Mobil, BP, Citgo and Exxon don't meet the standard.

I don't understand why these major brands would not meet the TT standards. Are their gasolines really lacking the quality/quantity of additives to meet the requirements?

Maybe their marketing "experts" have concluded that average drivers (non-BITOG members

) don't know or care what's in the gas they buy. Considering ExxonMobil has posted record profits, they certainly don't have any incentive to meet the TT standards anytime soon, especially if meeting the requirements would lower profit margins.

I think what is happening with the "majors" not meeting TT standards, lies more in the fact that not ALL of their grades do. For instance, BP/Amoco 93 may meet the standard but because the regular and mid-grade don't, that company can not be labeled as a Top Tier supplier.

I understand that the main advantage of "top tier" gas is that it contains enough of a quality cleaning addative, such as Techron, to prevent, and even eliminate, carbon buildup in the combustion chambers. A good thing, IMHO.

The problem is that not all gasoline octane-grades are top-tier. For example, of the current Shell gasolines only the "V-power" grade is top-tier. And, due regional formulations, PERHAPS not all vendors of a particular brand, say Chevron, sell the top-tier product.

The web site says all grades:

Gasoline retailers must meet the high TOP TIER standards with all grades of gasoline to be approved by the automakers as providing TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.

I kind of have my doubts, though. The web site is not very specific on anything. I look at the little Shell station by my house. I don't think it is a Shell-logo truck that delivers the fuel there. How do I really know that they are putting in the Shell additives at the fueling depot? I suspect the "top tier" requirements must allow for some flexibility because it would be very difficult for a retailer to get exact spec gas to all of their stations when trucks are shared, fuel depot is shared, many stations are not company owned.

Better chance of better gas, though, I suppose.

Around here, Shell advertises that their V-power grade is top-tier. Chevron advertises that all grades are top-tier. No other vendors, such as Union 76, Arco, Citgo, Safeway, and Costco advertise that any of their fuels are top-tier.
