Today I got a remote starter installed.

I loved the thought of opening the door on a nicely warmed up car on a frosty January morning when it's about seven degrees outside. So today I had a shop install a remote starter in my 2009 5MT Accord. I had always been afraid of having one of these units installed as I did not want to have any electrical issues. The more and more I read about the topic, the sooner I learned that the concern should not be so much about the remote starter but the installer equipping your vehicle with the system.

That said, I went to my trusty iPad and i5 and searched for a week, locating a good installer. I decided to travel to Erie, PA and have Enormis Mobile Specialties install my remote starter. My appointment was for 10am and I arrived a few minutes early. Everyone at the shop was super friendly and answered all of my questions without any problem. I waited for the install in their waiting room where they had a nice TV with cable, refrigerator with some pop, water, and iced tea, and a Keurig coffee maker with a nice assortment of K-cups. I used their WiFi and browsed some oil forum on my iPad and listened to the Diary of a Madman Ozzy album, The installation took about two hours.

The starter that I had installed was an AstroStart RS-711XR. It is a one-way starter with a 2000' range.

After the installation, Mike, the manager went through all of the features on the remote starter and showed me how everything worked, what happened when you did this or that, how to arm it, etc. He was very helpful, friendly and a cool guy.

On Enormis' website, they say over and over how they take pride in their work, professionally run wires, make good connections and do not cut wires. I looked over the newly added components on my car and saw nothing but excellence. All wires that were ran under the hood were loomed beautifully and put inside of that corrugated black plastic tubing and taped. All of the wiring under my dash looks factory and neatly added/tied up. Just super happy with the install. I could have probably found a cheaper place to have this installed, or closer, but honest to god, a good install and no electrical issues is worth the drive.

The best part is how well this starter works and the fact that the install was done right. I give a big kudos and recommendation to Emormis Mobile Specialties in Erie, PA. I am vey happy and would recommend them to anyone.

Love to read about good shops doing good work. Too often it is the opposite.

Does it have a way to detect if you are in neutral or not? what if it was in 1st and you remote started...

It cannot tell what gear you are in but the safety procedure prevents this.

You bring your car to a stop and apply your e-brake with the car in neutral, the remote starter then takes over. You turn your car off and remove your key. Your car stays running. You then exit the car and when the last door is closed, the car turns off. It knows that the only way you could've exited the car with it running and stopped was that you were in neutral.

You can fool it by opening the door and closing it while staying inside and it will start the car with your foot in the clutch and car in gear, but it's kinda like one of those "why would you do that" kind of things.

If you unlock a door and go back into the car after you have "armed" the remote starter, it cancels the safety procedure and you will have to manually start it again and set the e-brake, etc.

The total cost with tax was $455. A bit more being a manual and the Honda door unlock module since Honda's disable the factory fob when the car is running, I just have to hit the remote start button twice to unlock my doors after I have remotely started it.

Glad to hear it went so well. Remote start is a neat and very useful function. It's cool when you can make that little transmitter make your car do all sorts of tricks..

Did you email the guys at the shop about your satisfaction with their work? Another good way to praise them is put a good review on yelp.com. It is good to hear about guys doing a great job at a fair price.

Sounds like you found a good shop. I'd personally have had a block heater installed if it was that big of an issue, because it's a ton of gas at idle to actually warm up, and it's hardest on the engine.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of those are from shoddy installs...

The remote starter on my 06 Mazda 3 will be almost 8 years old soon and there was not even one hiccup with the system. I bought the factory unit from the dealer, which came with detailed installation instructions and installed in myself. We don't use it that often, but during cold winter mornings it sure makes a difference and my kids are less fussy.

The quality of installation is the key with remote starters, or any other alteration that has to be integrated into the electrical system, for that matter.

I would be afraid of managing to leave the car in gear and having it start up and start to drive away.

A friend of mine had that happen at work; his jeep backed into the neighboring RideAid.

No good reason to put one onto my Jetta; I've noticed it won't warm up in winter until I get onto the highway.

Now that I have the automatic truck though I've found myself wanting one. Would be nice to hit the button five minutes before I go, so as to get the frost on the windshield softened up a bit. Too much money for such a luxury though if you ask me, then toss in the install fear...

Maybe on diesels, heavy-duty vehicles with a corresponding GVW, or in NYC, but I seriously doubt that this is of any concern in WNY.

Yeah ... my parents ask why I don't let the focus warm up. It can sit idle all day on a cold day and it won't make any heat ever.

A friend of mine just bought an '05 Jetta TDI and says that it takes a bit to warm up and I agree that a remote start in that application probably won't do much.

The Accord warms up pretty quick, I get heat pretty soon.

That's because they disable the clutch interlock and didn't use a netural interlock to prevent that. In essence, a poor install.

The only way you could leave it in gear and exit the vehicle with the car off and still be able to remote start it is by:

(1) exit the car through the window like a NASCAR driver
(2) keep window rolled down and put car in gear through open window and then close windows

Remote starts are just as nice in the summer so you're not getting into a 110 degree car.

My car is about 60' from my desk at work and is parked outside at home, so I'm leaning toward getting one installed soon.
