I recently switched two of my five motors to "Full synthetic" or so i thought, grp 3 Valvoline syn-tec. But before i made the switch to my 5.3 ltr Silverado i called the dealership as i recalled someone telling me in the past that you could "never go back" to Dino after using synthetic in this motor as it would result in leaks bad seals ect, overal just issues galore. Well as i planned on keeping my truck on a strick diet of Synthetic i took the leap. Well, after spending alot of time on this site im seeing my beloved Valvoline syn isnt realy a true synthetic but in laymens terms *A grp 3 oil or dino thats much more refined with a better add package, only marketed in the US as synthetic* With this being the case and if im reading everything correctly on BITOG my synthetic isnt really a synthetic ! and i would be safe if so inclined to return to useing conventional for my 3-4 tho OCI'S i would most likely be safe ? But if i had a true synthetic in the truck like reline, or amsoil a ester based oil it would be a bad idea to return to conventional. Hopefully im making this clear as mud and i will get some of the truly informed to respond becouse my curiousity is peaked right now.
So can anyone lay claim to knowing the truth if any as to why the chevy tech says no go to switching back to dino after Syn is in ?
Much thanks. p.s sorry for [censored] spelling, in a rush and my spell check is MIA.

Dont listen to them, you can go back all you want, i know people and people here run synthetic in the winter and dino in the summer. but for what its worth, i am a certified mechanic and that is a [censored] deal. but synthetic does give much better protection through all climates, but its ok to do that

You can go right back. Maybe you want to run syn in winter only, many do. FWIW, a group 3 syn like SynPower does have advantages over a group 2 conventional, most obviously it's viscosity index or lack of viscosity index improvers.

But 3~4000 mile oci? Yes, change back to dino.

Im wondering why the service manager at Chevy would tell me that ? still scratching my head. Was i correct with my translation that Valvoline-syn, pp, M1, ect that are labelled as a full synthetic realy arent, there basicaly fancy Dino, just highly refined ? so in short i dont really have syn in my truck now ? with Valvoline Synthetic ?

The only time synthetics cause leaks, in most people's opinion, is when sludge or gunk has formed around dried/hardened seals, and the synthetic cleans that off and lets your engine leak.

Now with your truck and not even 50,000 miles, you could go to any oil and back and not have problems since that engine is in good shape.

yeah, 3-4mi oci's most of the time. heck i changed my cavi at 2000 mi last week, but only due to it was dino and strickly in town short runs back and forth to work and it was 8 months old. I just feel better with fresh fluid starting winter. What can i say, i like changing oil.

With technical products, there is usually "intense" ignorance. Myths, half-truths and outright falsehoods proliferate, sometimes just so people can talk like "an expert". It always pays to research and to seek out real experts and listen to them.
You often see this at a big box store where the clerks don't really know what they arfe selling but just want to make a sale.

now this i can follow !

Most people see leaks when they move from conventional to synthetic not vise versa.

I can't believe these are the people in charge of selling people cars. Feeding them false information.

+1 that it's [censored]. I've switched back and forth annualy, cheapest name brand dino available in summer and a good quality full synthetic for the winter cold for almost 5 years in my car, doesn't burn a drop, no abnormal engine noises or problems. Lots of "old wive's tales" with no basis in fact about oil and this is definitely one of them.

Go to whatever you want when you want. High mile engines have leaked with PAO or Ester but due to what Jaymus said. If that is true then you already had a gasket problem. But you are using highly refined mineral oil anyway. Bottom line is use any oil of choice and change to whatever, whenever if you want. Not a problem. I'd just stick to the Val Syn Power and up the OCI.

When i called approximately 6 months ago i explained to the chevy service manager that my truck had 46,xxx miles on it and i was planning on switching to synthetic, would this cause any problems ? A: No sir, just "dont go back" once you switch to the synthetic stick with it. There are additives that once introduced to the engine, seals, bearings ect must be maintained. If you switch back to conventional oil in your truck you will most likely experience problems.

thats pretty much how the call went, and this wasnt just a grease monkey this was the head service manager at our rather large chevy dealership here in Terre Haute IN. Ive since questioned alot of what ive been told since joining BITOG.

I know im fairly new to the site and havent posted up much , im still learning. but i do lurk ALOT and will say im enjoying the education im getting. alot of smart people on here.

Welcome!
You'll enjoy BITOG. We get hot headed sometimes. (Especially when we hear all the nonsense that's out there) :)
Most people here are pretty much 1 step away from drinking the oil. We live it. Buy huge stashes. Addicted to oil sales or are brand loyal. All sorts of crazy's!

OK, in this motor and me putting around 5 th on it a year, whats a good oci for Val syn ?
Yeah its my weekend truck, i use the cavi for the mile maker DD. Im not sure how good OR SAFE it would make me feel changing the oil every 2 yrs just to get to 10,000mi :) LOL
