To funnel or not to funnel?

Oh, this is so weird - I was thinking about this yesterday changing my oil and maybe putting up a thread and here's the thread.....

IF I use a funnel, I make sure it's wiped out.

Single Qts. I can tip into the spout.

BUT - Ya gotta make sure the ring around the cap don't fall in; you don't have to worry about that with a funnel..........

Yes ..think of the fear of cap ring droppage.

Now I know what you're thinking. Did I throw the cap in the trash with the ring still attached, or is it in there under the valve cover? But seeing that a ring can foul things in your valve train or block an oil return hole and totally ruin your day, you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky?

Actually, one oil cap ring per OCI will boost the polymer content of the oil very helpfully. That's why they're removable. You guys didn't know this?

So if one cap ring is good, two would be better?????

Well, did ya feel lucky, punk?

So, did you look in the trash??

I actually took the bottle I wondered about out of the case box I put it in - luckily, the ring was still there........

The real question is what is a better funnel?? A funnel made from a used Amsoil bottle or a funnel made from a used SuperTech bottle????

I like the Amsoil bottles :)

I cut the top off of a 2 liter soda bottle and use that as a funnel. The neck fits perfectly in the valve cover hole and it's nice a stable - no need to hold it. I cut the height so I can balance the "empty" 1 qt oil bottle to drain out as much as I can - "Good to the last drop." (I think it was a Coke Caffine Free bottle.) I wipe it out with a paper towel after use.

I use the same set up to add washer fluid - no, I don't use the SAME funnel as I use for the oil and no I don't add washer fluid to the engine oil.

GC bottles screw directly into my valvecover opening. Kinda nice to have the thing stand right up there.

The last thing I want to do is put dirty craap in the car when I'm trying to do the opposite.

We digress..dude your filter can handle a little bit of dirt. this is not a big deal. changing your oil on time is a bigger deal. AND YES, i USE A FILTER TO VOID SPILLAGE BUT I THOUGHT *THAT* WAS COMMON SENSE. *NO OFFENSE*

part german/ part pole here.
i have a couple vw passats.
those krauts have a special way with their toys, don't they?

this lends a comic idea: the german funnel, as conceived by a joint effort of volkswagon/audi and mercedes-benz.
first, it has to cost at least 150.00, be listed under an official part number, and be specified for application in technical manual.
-warranty coverage is jeopardized if factory approved fill is facilitated by other than specified device.
a non volkswagon funnel may be used, provided of course it meets vw 507.99, and , most critically, is labelled as such.

note also after use, the device is to be cleaned by genuine vw funnel spray purifier, swabbed with vw lint-free shop cloth ( USED ONE TIME FROM A SEALED PACKAGE,) then stored in contaminant proof 6 mil poly sheath ( vw acc 507.99-a) under controlled atmospheric conditions.

Murrays Auto sells these packs of several glossy cardboard throw away funnels. They are packaged flat. You tear one off and open it to a squar cross section funnel.

Does the word funnel start to look strange if you look at it too long?

I dont need to funnel with my vehicles since the engine fill holes are made to where theyre easy enough to pour in directly from the bottle. I just pour the oil with the jug spout facing the top so air can enter the jug to where the oil flow stays constant instead of gurgling as when pouring with the spout facing the bottom closest to the engine fill hole.

After reading all of this, this is the post that I agree with most.
Yes and if anyone needs further evidence, look at this thread: What do you use to wipe your dipstick?

Oh mannnnnnn...

Does anyone wipe their dipstick off when they change their oil...?

Don't you?

And don't forget, to account for those daily oil level checks in tallying total oil consumption. The half quart every 1000 miles that is wiped off the stick from oil level checks is not true consumption.

Surely we need to fit our engines with oil level sight glasses.

In fact, wouldn't it be great to have a digital oil level gauge on the dash where you could see oil level fluctuations as you drive. Mash the pedal and the level drops, let off and it rises. Wow! What a useful tool!

I always wanted a sight glass. I thought it would be nice to know the dynamic oil level ..which could possibly lead to larger sump capacity.
