Either not rated by the API and ILSAC or using superseded or obsolete specifications. It's not a bad thing if the product is from SOPUS, XOM, BP, RP, RL, Ashland, or any of the other fine big oil companies or quality boutique outlets and you're using it in a suitable application. It is a bad thing if it's something that's on the PQIA alert list.
In any case, QS is quality oil, whether it's their conventional, HM/Defy, or synthetic. I've used a lot of their conventional over the years with no complaints. The only reason I have a boatload of PYB (aside from it being a quality oil, too) is that it was on special when I got the G and my QS stash had dwindled to one jug.
Here's my tongue in cheek theory about Defy. It's a SOPUS experiment using BITOG members as the test subjects. It has the same UPC as QSHM and seems to be replacing it, at least in Canada. Up here, it even has the same red bottle, with a different label. So, they're changing the label and tweaking the formula (or perhaps even leaving it as is, who really knows), and seeing how much of a buzz we create.
In any event, I'm likely to try it, assuming I can find it at an appropriate price. I'm sure the old F-150 will like it.
