I see this is Castrol Edge oils that they have a higher titanium content then most brands. Is it used as a sacrificial metal like moly? Just curious.

CASTROL EDGE IS NOW TITANIUM STRONG
Castrol EDGE is now boosted with FLUID TITANIUM TECHNOLOGY. The unique titanium technology physically changes the way oil behaves under extreme pressures. In industry standard tests, Castrol EDGE with Fluid Titanium Technology has doubled its film strength, preventing oil from breaking down and reducing friction to maximize engine performance.*

Castrol EDGE is three times stronger against viscosity breakdown than the leading synthetic and leading conventional oils. The unique titanium technology physically changes the way oil behaves under extreme pressures doubling its film strength*, preventing oil from breaking down and reducing friction to maximize engine performance.

From what I've seen on the VOA section... Castrol Edge Dexos1 Gen2 5w30 has Titanium at 9 ppm while Valvoline Advanced FS Dexos1 Gen2 5w30 has 35 ppm. Unless there was an updated VOA on Castrol Edge w/Titanium that I missed … Valvoline Advanced has more Titanium than Castrol Edge does. Appears that Castrol GTX Magnatec has 30 ppm. Should research this in more detail... there may be another VOA that is more updated somewhere online!

Wonder how they measure "double" and "three times" ... Is there a specific test with actual results comparing different oils?

Or, you could buy Kendall GT-1, which has more titanium and seems seems to be just as good in general but costs way less.

I don't think Castrol is bad, per se, but I think the Germans go really hard on their cachet instead of actual performance.

Yes.
Functionally Ti works quite the same way as Moly and Boron, as friction reduction and improving MOFT.

Which Germans?

I'm using Kendall GT-1 Max 5W20 in my wife's '14 Dodge Journey. I haven't done a UOA, but it's doing a great job, with zero consumption between OCIs. I had been using PP 5W20 in it since we bought it new, but through my local Kendall Distributor the GT-1 Max costs less per quart than buying the 5 quart jugs of PP at Walmart. I might be imagining, but the motor sounds quieter on the Kendall, especially on cold morning startups.

I've come to really like ConocoPhillips oils; mainly due to my local Distributors and their very reasonable prices, but I also think they make excellent oils. And they're also very accommodating to work with.

I use Phillips 66 Guardol ECT with liquid titanium in my Semi-Truck as well, and my UOAs have come back with slightly better numbers compared to when I used Mobil Delvac and Chevron Delo conventional and synthetic blends in my Detroit Diesel motor.

Dak, 2.4L or 3.6L? I ask because I had the 2.4 in my Journey and it was a great engine. Underpowered but really low wearing from what I could see on the UOA. I have the 3.6 now in my Caravan.

It's apparently fine titanium dioxide (TiO_2) powder, found in virtually all white toothpastes as a brilliant-white pigment. It also happens to work as an AW/EP/FM additive under the right concentration:

Afton patented it after "converting the solid titanium into a liquid," in other words making an organic compound out of titanium dioxide just like you do with molybdenum disulphide (MoS_2), therefore becoming oil-solvable -- hence the name liquid titanium:

Can I save money and add toothpaste to the crankcase for improved engine protection?

Organic (not in the sense that it has organic molecules) and vegan version, however, "nonnano:"

A lot more expensive but if you want to get one of the nano versions (see the list at the bottom of the page):

https://www.us-nano.com/inc/sdetail/269

1/7th of a rounded spoon gives 100 ppm but since this is solid titanium and won't properly dissolve, you need to put in 3 to 8 rounded spoons (5000 ppm or so) per the first reference I posted above to get the AW/EP/FM effect.

Looking forward to your UOA.

Only if you want to thicken up your 0w20 close to
a 5w30 and have minty fresh exhaust.

So, who is doing the titanium UOA? Half-a-dozen round spoons of the cheap Amazon titanium mixed into the oil should work.

Looking at VO and UOAs, Kendall GT-1 seems to be a very underrated (or rather, undermarketed) oil that consistently flies under the radar because the brand doesn't carry as much weight and it's not widely distributed. I don't think I've ever seen any bad reports on it, and it's shockingly cheap. I don't know why ConocoPhillips doesn't throw some marketing money behind it and actually try to sell the stuff.

The Ti Castrol uses is not the same as what CP/Kendall is using. I was told or read it's their prorprietary developed Ti additive. I'm not even sure if it's the same as Afton's.

Does Castrol own an additive company? I didn't think so.
