If you find a company that will sell you a "lower" speed rated tire than what came on the car let me know.

Tire stores will sell you any tire you want. They may refuse to mount it if it is not the type that came on the vehicle if you bring the vehicle with you. Easy enough to deal with. Take the rims off and just take those in. Never seen a store refuse to mount tires on rims you bring in.

Wal-Mart will only mount the same tire type( S, T, H, etc... )if you have the vehicle there and want them to put them on the vehicle. But if you bring in the rims they will mount any tire on them for you. Most tire stores are the same.

The tires are P195/60-R15 for a Saturn SC1. The BFG Advantage are around $90, while the BFG Touring are around $80. This will be just my 4th set of tires on this car with 213,000 miles. In other words, the car is very easy on tires (averaging about 70K per set), in my opinion.

In general, any H-rated tire is built better/safer than a T-rated one, so I would not call it a waste.

+1!

It's funny - but when I went to Tire Rack to compare the tires, they allow have the Advantage and not the Touring. I wonder what that means.

When I went to BFG's website, I note with interest that BOTH tires have the same specs. I can't tell a difference between the 2.

I also note with interest that both come in T and H rated versions in the P195/60R15 size (the one of interest here.)

So........ I don't think you can draw any conclusions about the difference between the tire lines.

Speed rating differences? First, I don't think the difference between the tires is due to the speed rating. For practical purposes, a tire manufacturer can put the same tread compound on the different casings and get the same UTQG ratings.

So I suspect that the differences in the UTQG ratings is due to a difference in what BFG sees as what the customer wants.

Personally, I opt for the H speed rated tires on all my vehicles. The lone exception is my van - which you can't get H rated tires for.

In the past I was interested in trying a set of t-rated tires to see if the tread life would be significantly longer. It wasn't a price concern. I push my tires hard and appreciate grip.
