Tire techs: What’s the best balancing AT tire?

I used to be a Toyo fanboy...more AT2 and 3's than I can count and RT's and MT's too but my new favorite AT is Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT. my 37's take a fair amount of weight but roadforce balance very well and are super smooth and do exceptionally well off road. my 255/85-17 (35x10) take very little weight in fact a couple took no weight.\

Those look killer. After 3 sets of Toyo AT3’s, I don’t think they’re worth the hype anymore. I’ve had them in LT285/70r17, P285/70r17, and LT285/75r16 and they ALL hummed on the freeway starting right around 55 mph.

I’m eyeing Yokohama Geolander G015’s next..

My brother swears by G015’s on his Tahoe. The only thing I didn’t like about them is that they seem to have a somewhat high rolling resistance. But they’re stellar everywhere else

I’ve got them in my wife’s Suburban, 33” equivalent but P-metric. It’s an excellent tire, and I haven’t found any weaknesses.

As far as balancing goes, and general tire goodness, it’s hard to beat Michelin and BFG (basically Michelin’s offroad subsidiary)

Funny enough I saw the Thunderers on my Walmart app today and thought they looked pretty cool

I have maybe 4k miles on them now, and they seem to be holding up well. I like the tread pattern. Has a bunch of siping, wider pattern and larger lugs on the outside for off road, closer pattern and smaller lugs in the middle for loads and road grip, channels in the middle to shed water.....pretty good. Looks like a military tread pattern.

I dont have a bunch of experience with them, just going by my current usage, but....they are half the cost of some others, so if it does not work out, the pain is less.

I did not buy them, they came on the truck when I bought it.

They sound like they do exactly what the overpriced Interco tires do for more than half of the cost

I’m glad to read this here about the Toyo and Nitto lines. I’ve been very tempted to try them but have also wondered how much is hype.

Yokohama is phasing out the G015 and replacing it with the G018, which looks to be a bit more aggressive though it doesn’t have the “sidewall art” which is popular these days. They released the LT version first which of course doesn’t review competitively against P-metric sizes with things like noise and wet traction. I suspect as more P sizes come out they will be a solid tire, but I’d also like to see real reviews first.

In my limited experience, I suspect the Japanese tires in general will have a higher consistency and quality.

G015 is/was a great tire and I’m sad that they’re phasing it out slowly. Whatever is left out there is probably all last production runs so if you buy them you won’t know what the manufacturing dates are until you get them. If you’re looking for a lightweight option, Firestone Destination AT2’s have good reviews. They don’t take a lot of weight to balance which is a plus.

I don’t use AT tires myself - but a friend’s Tundra I do the oil changes on has Firestone Destination AT2s on it. America’s Tire did the install and they didn’t use a lot of weight to get them balanced. They ride decently smooth.

I've always had great luck with Toyos/Nittos. Have had probably 3-4 sets of the OG Terra Grapplers, 3 sets of the Toyo OC AT3s, and I also have a set of the Recon Grapplers on my JLU. Love them all, great on road and off road. They tend to weigh less than similar tires, which I like. My 35s on my JLU weigh like 52 pounds each.

Also have a set of Nokian Outpost ATs on the LR3 and those are a fantastic tire too. Very very very quiet and great in the snow/ice. Also had a set of the Yoko G015s once on a KL Cherokee, they were fine too, but more of an aggressive all season than a true AT.

Would never run hankooks again, very loud and not great performance on or off road.

Ag\reed, probably a very h\eavy duty service tire, but for everyday, way to rough\\\. Of course these tires are not really for on road use, and are typically purch\ased for looks.

I do aswell, but h\ave a use for a g\ood off road tire for one of my trucks.

I would not be g\etting\ th\ose tires ag\ain. Maybe th\ey would be ok for a dually? Wh\o knows, but th\ere are better tires out th\ere wh\ich\ ride better and h\ave as much\ capability
