Tire runout

I bought a new set of Michelins at DT about six months ago . The front tire when looking at it straight on goes up and down about 3/16 ths of a inch so it appears out of round. I took it back and they said this is normal for a tire, that most tires do this . Is this true?

Are you getting any ride disturbance? Ask DT to Road Force the tire and see if it is within proper specifications.

That machine is pretty cool. That's what they used on my explorer tires and it's pretty smooth now.

3/16 is a bit much I would think. You would think they would at least turn the tire on the rim 180 and re-balance.

I the hands of a tech that knows what he is doing, the Hunter Roadforce GSP9700 is a FANTISTIC tool. Local Subaru dealer took my lumpy, imposable to balance(four times in 35K)tires, and turned them in to works of art. I now have no vibration, cold or hot, from 0 - 100MPH.

We don't know if it is the rim, loose parts, or the tire itself.

Assuming it's the tire that is out of round,your first concern is balance. Good luck.
When a radial tire is moving on the street with a load, it deforms greatly. It is by no means round.
The out of roundness can contribute to some vibration, but it is not as horrible as you may initially think.

I believe run-out is supposed to be measured with a dial indicator .. not a yardstick .
