Tips on how to increase situps?

GumbyJarvis,

My compliments for your progress to date and for taking on this challenge. Don't be surprised if you hit a "wall" and your progress slows. Take a breather, relax a bit, and take another shot at it after a rest.

Best of luck to you.

1. These are the numbers you need to consider. 50 points in each event apparently allows you to survive basic, but 60 points is the minimum Army standard otherwise, including advanced individual training (AIT):

Push ups = 42 needed for 60 points; 35 for 50 points
Sit ups = 53 needed for 60 points; 47 needed for 50 points
2 mile run = 15:54 minutes needed for 60 points; 16:31 minutes needed for 50 points.

I took this info from what I found posted on line, not necessarily from the Army Reg. Think it is basically correct, though.
2. Over time you need to increase your ability to run the full two miles. I assume the recruiter provided you with a diagnostic test, but the results you posted don't resemble the real deal. Work towards the real deal and these are your minimum benchmarks.
--Also have your recruiters/PT buddies make sure your form on sit ups and push ups (in particular) is correct according to the regulation. There is a good chance that the graders in basic will be more critical of your form and may not give you credit for each and every push up/sit up that you do.

3. Good chance you may get to do basic at Fort Knox; your AIT should also be at Fort Knox unless things have changed substantially in the past couple of years. Compared to Fort Benning and Fort Jackson, it is a smaller venue. All things considered, it is a fairly good place to go through basic.

Best of luck to you. Work hard on the PT aspects. As you get closer to your class date and know the location, some of us might be able to provide a little more specific information. I would encourage your family to attend Family Day activities and your BCT graduation if possible.

I am shocked at the low limits of your physical capabilities.
I know this sound offensive, and that's not how I mean it, but I really am surprised.
Keep hammering your excercises [repeat to exhaustion when you can't do anymore -this is important]. Eat better, and use a Protein [whey is great and cheap] powder after workouts to best help growth.
Rest a couple of days to let the muscles heal, instead of daily workouts which re-tear things.
For some reason, stomach muscles can be worked out daily, though.

I just had a bout with colon cancer [resection and chemotherapy], peripheral neuropathy of hands and feet from the chemo, and massive blood clot in a leg.
You CAN improve! And you will!
I am 58, 6'2" and 228 lbs. I can do 60 pushups at one time, and 20 good pull ups.

What happens to the people at Basic Training that can not pass the PT requirements ?

I do not know. Somehow everyone is "pushed" thru in my experience.

+1, great advice. Keep going OP, and keep us updated on your status. You're doing great!

The Army will attempt remedial training and they can hold you back and insert you into another cycle if necessary. Final solution might be the Trainee Discharge Program.

Not sure how that works since no recruit that I personally know has failed the PT portion. If you fail the initial diagnostic test, you are held over in a Fitness Training Company, and do substantial remedial PT to get you up to standard, according to the info I found.

Will do!

in 3 weeks my situps went from 9 to 17, pushups increased to 30, and 1 mile run went from 10:33 to 7:32. So Yeah, I got this

good to have a recruiter who is willing to do PT and exercise 4 days a week

Good progress, keep it up. At this point your only job is to continue to improve your fitness level.

Do you have issued boots? If so, start walking in them! Work your way up to walking 12 miles, at 4mph minimum. Carry some weight on your back, too.

Good luck!

19 situps, 31 pushups, 8:13 mile run.
Passed my 1-1-1 today! WOO!
Now on to 2-2-2, 42 Pushups, 53 situps, and 2 miles in 15:54, Oh yeah! Hooah!

Last week was 7:32, but last week wasnt raining either

Keep it up. Work on building your endurance. I am in the same boat as you. I have not had a physical fitness test in the last two years. But for my new career choice I have had one and I have a second in the next two weeks. Keep on working you will do this.
