Use a strong account passwords for admin and make yourself a regular low rights user account for daily use. Enable two factor auth on everything you can. Don't click the email....

I personally use MSE/Windows Defender and spybot s&d. Out of paranoia I'll run an offline scan once a month.

If you stay off the dark side of the net you will rarely have problems.

If it seems too good to be true, it's probably a scam

Depends on the programs you need. You can get some free software such as an office suite from open office, photo program with gimp and various programs from other sources. CNET can be useful, sometimes it can be a little problematic but I would give it a shot.
