Now Im sure your intentions are good, but you really need to consider the practicality of owning a motor vehicle if you cannot afford to maintain it properly. Looking for a TC is good due diligence, but what happens when this $5k car needs tires, suspension work, etc????

+1.......................

And lets see...$4 gas??? That adds up.

Honda Accord 4 cyl 2003+ use a timing chain. Most, if not all Nissan 4cyl use a chain as well. This may not be the most important criteria but I think it is a valid concern. Timing belts are very expensive to replace and not doing so can destroy your engine. I have an issue with Hyundai/Kia and their need to have a timing belt replaced every 60k miles (at least this was true when I was in the market)

Nissan 2.5QR and 3.5VQ engines use a chain. I would avoid the 2002-2004 2.5 engines, since they have other issues that could possibly grenade the engine, such as the pre-cat coming apart and loose butterfly screws. I think they had those problems resolved by 2005 though.

If you do find a vehicle with a recently replaced timing belt, make sure you get the receipts for the job and not just word of mouth.

feel better now?

Hopefully you were able to buy a car for a little less and have some left over to repair it with. I've had LOTS of old hoopty cars myself that always needed something done & cost very little.
