Car is 2006 Elantra. Last timing belt change was in 2010, so the belt is 14 years old with 35,000 miles on it. Belt looks surprisingly good with no cracking of the rubber, but , clearly, it's time for a change.

Usually I would go with the OEM belt from the dealer, but OEM on this car is Gates, and I've been hearing some really bad things about Gates recently.

So, what belt would you buy? Go with the Gates dealer OEM or get an aftermarket belt from Mitsiboshi, Continental, ACDelco, etc. Just about everybody makes a belt for this application.

I have the Aisin TKK002 sitting in my garage waiting for a September installation on my neighbors 2002 Elantra. I've used them over the years and have nothing bad to say about any of the components that come in the kit. It came with Korean made rollers, a Korean made Aisin water pump, a Singapore made Mitsuboshi belts, and an unlabeled water pump gasket. I paid $93,79 for the kit.

Go to the dealer and get a genuine Hyundai belt, even if it's made by Gates, it's made to Hyundai's standards; 14 years is impressive.
^This is whatI I would do as well. Also, Gates are excellent belts to my understanding, in fact there's one spinning happily in my first year Miata as I speak. ;)

Was gonna suggest no rush on the belt change despite it being a long time since it was last changed, but.. looked up the car and being an 'interference' motor I would definitely get this done ASAP.

Gates belts and timing belts are high quality and always have been.

It's the hard parts that come in their timing belt kits now that are suspect and should be avoided.

i assume its an interference fit engine, if so BETTER safe than SORRY$$$ heat kills belts so i used to lift my hood, 2001 turbo jetta after a long hot drive + i changed belt + everything else related @ 75 thou, on the VW forums more failures reported in hotter climates $$$

Welcome to BITOG 🥳

The Aisin kit is the gold standard for Asian timing belt kits.

That said, there is nothing wrong with a Gates-made OEM timing belt. It is made to Hyundai specs; Gates is just the supplier.

Big thanks to everyone that responded to this question. I now feel confident using either the dealer OEM or the Aisin.
