Vehicle in question is my uncles truck bought new, a 2005 Dodge 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins common rail, as of yesterday it had 415,815 miles, mostly highway miles and a good bit of heavy towing over the last 13 years. It has been very reliable, still on the original 48RE transmission, never been rebuilt. Its bone stock except for a 4 inch exhaust installed at around 250k miles. My question is regarding the injectors, it has the original injectors and CP3 injection pump. for the past year or so, we've noticed a puff of black smoke at startup and moderate smoke on acceleration. We did take the cat off when we did the exhaust, but these common rails burn pretty clean compared to previous engines, so Im suspecting injectors. Ive heard that if an injector on these engines goes out, itll fry a piston in no time. So what do you guys think, should he have a good diagnostic scan done to see if its the injectors?

My guess would be yes. I'd remove them and send them to Trav if there's anyway the truck can be out of service for a week or so. He will clean and rebuild them to oem + standards. Looks like the service runs $130 for 8 injectors plus shipping.

Unfortunately Trav doesn't do diesel injectors, as they require extremely expensive equipment to do.

Its been a great truck, only things that have been changed are a few AC compressors, idler pulleys, fan clutch, and front end things like ball joints, shocks, etc, normal wear items, nothing major. My uncle takes great care of it and its immaculate. If he ever decides to get rid of it ill most likely buy it and try to take it to a million miles.

IMO I would go through the entire fuel system with that mileage. If you put new injectors in and that cp3 decides to grenade itself it will take the entire high side with it. We just had a cp4 fail where the pump locked up and actually wouldn't let the motor spin on a ford 6.7. There was large metal chunks throughout the entire high and low side systems. However it has 25,000 hrs of run time (approx 750k-800k miles). The entire high side system is sold as a kit to a tune of 4300$. Wouldn't be a bad idea to replace low pressure pump too.
