Time based OCI's

I notice a lot of people on this forum say 'change 3k miles or 3 months, whichever comes first', and a more than one year OCI is almost universally shunned among participants, even the AMSOIL freaks with their beloved 25000mile/1year warrantee.

Many posters would have you believe that if you drive a car even 500 miles a year, ie: a couple summer drives, you still shouldn't leave a group IV synthetic in for more than a year. (note I say Group IV, it has been said that some group V ester-based oils can be fairly hydroscopic)

What is the logic, if any, behind this? I can understand the logic behind the 3k mile/3 month, whichever comes first OCI is to implicitly compensate the interval for individuals who operate their vehicles with an inordinate number of cycles (leading to fuel contamination, soot buildup, etc. -- all the cons of running a cold engine). But for rarely driven vehicles, this advice would hardly seem appropriate.

After all, engines these days are sealed fairly tightly when sitting stationary, and unless exposed to a flood or leaking gaskets, water ingress is nearly impossible. Oil is naturally anti-corrossive and low oil acidity (low TAN/high TBN) keeps internal engine corrosion to a minimum. Synthetic oils do not suffer oxidative breakdown at all at normal atmospheric temperatures, so why then, do people still speak of such short time-based intervals on cars that are relatively rarely driven?
 
Few miles does not not necessarly mean seldom driven. Most of the time it means driven seeral times a day for short intervals. The logic is simple, you can change the oil and filter for $6.30 plus tax, at that cost why mess with anything else.
 
Well, I've seen results of "set up" engines that aren't run very often and "stored" ..even inside heated garages. I have the good fortune of knowing an engine builder (soul proprietor) for the local stock car and drag crowd. He showed me the internals of an engine that the owner had pulled from the race car and had just stored in a heated garage.

His first comment gave me a clue. "Well, he didn't lossen up the valves before he put it away". I also had the good fortune to help him cart a block or two the car wash to pressure wash the water jacket. From just leaving the car wash to the return to his shop, surface corrosion had started to occur, requiring oiling (wiping, etc.) to prevent full scale rusting from taking place.

In short, any moisture in the air will eventually form rust in the cylinders. This will be removed with the first stroke or two and will be suspended in the oil. Some may be trapped by the filter ..but probably a good bit of it will just circulate around and keep knocking off more of the internals.

It's not done in any contemporary engine that I know of ..but when I owned a 70's AMC Hornet (I think) wagon beater that still had the owners manual in it, they actually recommended pouring a quart of oil down the carb if long term storage was considered. I imagine that this was abandoned for the likelyhood that the average consumer devolved in intelligence to the point that this would be a disaster.

Just my speculation/conclusions based on observations. I don't have a clue to the absolute impact of subjecting any given engine to those conditions in long term ownership. Given that you're talking about a "good weather Sunday driver" ..I would imagine that any "damage" would be measured in terms of "future owners" (many years) instead of miles.
