Ticking noise with PYB 5w30 when cold

I started my can this morning... tic tic tic tic tic tic tic aaaa tic aaa tiicc...

car calls for 5w20, i have Pennzoil 5w30 conventional Conventional in there.

good sale at walmart on Pennzoil Platinum 5w20, should i make the switch?
had no tick with castrol syntec or M1.

Allow me to be the first to suggest the proper grade of oil.
The PP at WalMart for $24 or $25 is a good deal though, I personally use syn in the winter, dino/syn in the summer.

On a hyundai that might be an SAE 40

The 5w20 is just for CAFE - anywhere else these cars run higher vis oils as needed.
If the oP is a short tripper only, s/he would be better off with the 5w20 in sub freezing temps. Hyundai spec good filters! I would trash the carquest and get to the dealer and toss on a Genuine Hyundai Filter - Do it PSY GANGNAM Syle!

Wife's car was more noisy on start up a couple of days ago. It was below freezing and car had sat for 12hrs+

This morning it wasn't as cold and it was it's usual self.

No change in oil or filter, purely to do with temperature.

If the car has hydraulic tappets then it is possible it simply took them longer to quieten down due to the oil being colder.

My wife's car has 0w40 Mobil 1. My Volvo sounds the same when started from cold regardless of temp, and runs 5w30 Castrol Magnatec A5/B5.

I don't think there is any issue here. And I can't see the viscosity the OP is running would make much of a difference IMHO.

I would second the Hyundai filter. I always use manufacturer own filters on the Hyundai Accent the wife owned a few years ago. They were under £10 so why muck about trying to save £2, not even worth worrying about unless you run a fleet of 100 vehicles doing big miles.

I can live without a £6 annual saving.

Here is a great answer. The OEM filters seem to be really helpful in Hyundai/KIA's

Just wait until it's -10 or 15C. I have not seen an overhead cam engine that would not tick at those temps.
My neighborhood has some new or brand new Elantras, Accords and Camrys and I can hear them tick early in the morning when I walk my dog.
The Accord and Camry have 0w20 in them for sure, so don't think that synthetic will make such a huge difference. On my car, for example I never heard or felt the difference between conventional and synthetic.

IMO....I would change the oil filter before I entertained the thought of changing any oil, especially Pennzoil Conventional.

Just compare the VI and the pour points of both oils. IMO....there is no real dramatic difference between the synthetic and Pennzoil Conventional

You're right. It's winter in Canada and engines get noisy.

All Hyundais make a racket on start-up when they are first started on a cold day. 5w30 is just fine to use. A Hyundai filter is a must. Great filter at a great price. If they came in different configurations, I would put them on my Cherokee and my Trailblazer.
