Mobil 1 made my former 2000 GM LS1 tick. Went back to conventional and never touched Mobil 1 since and never will. Lot of advertising hype with that stuff.

With so many excellent oils now available, I'd just switch that first to see if there is a difference. If there is, stick with whatever works and sleep soundly at night.....

As someone who has used M1 for decades and also PP in recent years - the marketing hype is Pennzoil. Guys on here sound like rock star groupies over freaking motor oil.
Both companies do proof of performance testing - and prove you will run the wheels off a vehicle with either brand - and the engine will still run well regardless of all the semantics ...
There are a dozen synthetic oils that can do the above without in your face marketing ...

18 years on M1 in my 1999 LS1. Still waiting to hear the 1st tick. And still waiting for my Maytag washer to need a repair....now over 25 yrs old. For some things you just have to wait............

Synthetics made my 3000GT tick REALLY bad on first of the day cold weather startups,but only in cold weather. I'm just thinking some engines are persnickety when it comes to oil. My 300ZX purrs like a happy kitty whether I use 5W30 or 20W50,conventional or synthetic
I think it's mostly a cold weather, temp drop thing...

Haha that reminded me of those Maytag commercials where it showed the repairman leaning bored on the Maytag machine because he had nothing to do because they weren't breaking down

I miss all those silly commercials!If the filter is the same (?), it's the same old over night synthetic "drain off" that's been around since the beginning. The residual oil film is thinner due to synthetics lower surface tension. In part, that's where the 0W and 5W ratings come from.
Easy enough to prove. Leave the filter so it's not a variable and drain the oil, install any syn-blend you want and see if it's gone? My bet, dead silent. Or just add a qt of any Mobil conventional oil and see if it goes away... It will.
Been there, done that so many times I run out of fingers. I don't like noisy motors, even on cold start. Bothers me. So I find oils that make them quiet. Others don't seem to care ...

A very unscientific test,but a test nonetheless,to me synthetics feel slicker between the fingers and dinos feel tackier. Maybe this very unscientific and layman's test could explain the startup tick phenomena? IF,and this is my opinion only,synthetics are uber-dewaxed dinos I'm guessing the leftover waxes in dinos is what feels "tacky" creating a buffer thus preventing startup tick?

It is often said Dino clings better to idle parts. And few would doubt Mobil 1 is not quick to top of motor.
In my shop - there is everything from Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 to Delvac 1300 15w40. If I went by sound - I'd put that Delvac in my ecoboost GDI - hmmm - and that ain't happening. PUP is the loudest oil in that motor - 3 of us listening ...
What, me worry? I'm gonna run it 5k like the M1 I drained ...

Well - I'm not saying I disagree with BrocL ..... he is the Gearhead Supreme on this subject ... I'm typically a 0k-100k driver and give away or sell to BIL owner ... BrocL BUYS them at 100k. I do this because I travel often and my family don't know much about anything but putting gas in them and go-go-go ...
That 15w40 is actually for my 5.3L since it is the only vehicle to sit unused for a couple weeks at a time ...

If it's a hot idle tick that might just be a thin oil issue, as some Mobil 1 oils are at the bottom of their range and even a small change in viscosity can make a big difference.

If it's a hot idle tick that might just be a thin oil issue, as some Mobil 1 oils are at the bottom of their range and even a small change in viscosity can make a big difference.
If it's hot idle tick; it's NOT the oil sir. Brother rebuilds these LS engines. 5w/10w30 oils are fine in them. HEMI tick I found to be easily cured pre filling filter with oil as brother taught me this on LS series engines

Had a half dozen of those motors - 75% of the time they had Mobil 1 5w30 in them ...

You'all know I'm not bashing Mobil 1 or any other synthetic, right... I'm not saying they do not protect well, etc. It's that cold viscosity number that we seldom look at plus surface tension (dino vs syn).
But, for poops and grins I put some Mobil 1 10w30 I had in the 302 Big Bronco during one oil change (veh sits for a week at a time) at about 188,000. Went to fire that thing up after it sat and it sounded like a can of marbles rolling down hill. I could hear every moving part slapping each other. It was actually scary
I'm sure they had an oil film. Just not a thick one ... So about a week of that (noisy after 2 days of sitting), and out it came and in went the Delo400. Quiet from then on out. 216K the other day and full of Delvac and runs fine. Passes SMOG and pulls the boat.
It's just some engines are oil particular (noise wise) and some are not. The only way to know is to listen.
The Mobil 1 went back into a jug and went into the Beemer next change ... Was still in there when I sold the Beemer a few months later
