Thunderbird used to show the file size of the e-mails received but the last few versions do not. Is there something I am missing that I can change that will show the file sizes?

Mine too - but it's there, you just need to expand that column.
if you using the latest like I am version 2.0.0.19 look at your tabs just below the toolbar where you see "subject" sender" go to the far right there is a small icon; click on it to show items to display there you will find items to check on or off to display in your tab bar you will then need to readjust their sizes to see everything.
Thanks! I had looked for that before and searched the help topics too. I am always curious about the file size when it takes forever to get new emails. I feel so much better now.....
