+1 I many Xw20 proponents made that claim quite regularly.

What a typical load of obfuscating nonsense.
Some people just love fret about oil shear. The same individuals that would lambaste a high VI 40 grade like Mobil 1 0W-40 shearing to a 30 grade are getting their kickers in a twist postulating about a 20 grade oil shearing to a 16 grade as a if shear really matters in an OEM oil.

There are some very shear stable 0W/5W-20 oils and some that are not but as a grade 20 grade oils are more shear stable than 30 grade oils which are more shear stable than 40 grade oils etc. Probably the most shear prone oil is the 5W-50 grade.

The whole point of creating the new SAE category 16 was so it would be completely different from the existing 20, 30, 40's. This is because these oils will not be backwards compatible with existing oils or engines.

I realize that. I wonder how many people will try it in an engine calling for 20 grade oil anyway. Time will surely tell, after all this is Bitog, and some of us like to experiment. Now if the engine was specifically designed to run on a 16 grade oil I see no problem. I do however see a problem running it in an engine calling for a 20, 30, or 40 grade oil.

It will depend on the actual spec's of the oil.
If for example a 0W-16 has better MRV spec's than Mobil 1 0W-20 or Sustina 0W-20 then it could have some specialized extreme cold applications where even low normal oil temp's can't be achieved.
It could also have some blending advantages.

I have nothing I could use it in straight but I'm sure since it's not much lighter than a 0W-20 grade it could be used in many 0W-20 applications especially in the winter when maximum oil temp's are low.
 
I'm looking forward to blending some of this new 0W-16 with some 7W-39 or maybe even 8W-44 to get a nice 4W-28 oil, since 5w30 is just a bit too thick and 0W-20 won't protect well enough.

You know that sounds like a fine and dandy idea you got there. But I'd probably aim for a good 3W-27, you know, cuz' you'd probably see a nice .0003% increase in your gas mileage...

“The most compelling reason is that one of the most popular SAE viscosity grades for heavy-duty diesel trucks around the world and diesel passenger cars in Europe is SAE 15w40,” Covitch said. “Our task force was concerned that adopting SAE 15 might be confusing to consumers familiar with SAE 15w40 oils and might lead to misapplication of the wrong oil in the wrong vehicle, particularly vehicles not designed to operate on such low-viscosity lubricants."

The second incentive to adopt SAE 16 was in anticipation of new lower engine oil viscosity grades that could be defined in future revisions of J300.

"If we continued to count down from SAE 20 to 15 to 10, etc., we would be facing continuing customer confusion issues with popular low-temperature viscosity grades such as SAE 10W, SAE 5W, and SAE 0W," he noted. "By choosing to call the new viscosity grade SAE 16, we established a precedent for future grades, counting down by fours instead of fives: SAE 12, SAE 8, SAE 4."

Besides adding the SAE 16 grade, the new revision to J300 also revises the minimum high-temperature viscosity range of SAE 20. “In the past, an SAE 20 oil’s kinematic viscosity, measured at 100°C (212°F) was 5.6 cSt (centistokes) to less than 9.3 cSt," Covitch explained. "This was a much broader range than SAE 30, 40, 50, or 60, and the lower part of the old SAE 20 range was not being utilized. Therefore, the minimum kinematic viscosity was increased to 6.9 cSt to bring the range of SAE 20 in line with that of the higher-viscosity grades.”

Makes sense; it just seems strange at this point since it's currently the only multiple-of-4 grade that's not a multiple-of-10.

Who knows, the possibility is slim but still existent that there may be a need for a grade lighter than SAE 4.

+1 on the 3W-27. Everyone knows that a 4W-28 shears down to a 27 in no time while a 27 doesn't shear

The days of keeping up with simple preventative maintainence and having cars last 200k+ miles are coming slowly to an end.

Are these "sealed" hyundai & kia transmissions without a dipstick to monitor oil level ?

But if people were to do both of those things, then a lot of fuel would be saved worldwide. Gasoline isn't going to last forever, and people need to be less wasteful of it. Sure, running lighter oil is only a small step but every bit helps.

My gf's 07 Mustang is like this. I'm guessing there's no way to do a diy pan drain/refill?

Mobil 1 0W-40, and other 5W-50s have EXACTLY WHAT ??? to do with 0W-16, and the assertion that 16 works as some 20s fall below the HTHS minimum...you probably ought to create another thread if you want to talk about these oils shearing...
