Threaded Filter Stud Removal

I have a new 05 Honda Accord 4cyl that has a filter from Toys-R-Us.

I see I can get a Mopar adapter (on order) to allow a conversion from the 20 x 1.5 threads to 3/4 x 16. Found the bigger WIX 51329 (on order) that looks like it might fit.

So I need to get the stock 20 x 1-5 stud out of the block. I assume it is threaded into the boss on the block, jammed tight with maybe a dab of Loctite.

Anybody know hot to get the factory threaded stud out of the block? I don't like wrenching on the threads with a visegrip. (N8wv1: are you there?) I assume a internal pipe wrench doobie might work, or maybe a couple jam nuts on the threads?

Any suggestions?
 
I don't know about Honda, but many of those oil filter studs have a hex where it seats up to the block. If it does, you can use a deep socket or a box wrench.

If not, an internal pipe stub remover should work. Visit your local hardware or plumming supply store.
 
Yep, Jim's right, most (not all) have a hex in the middle that's larger than the thread OD. Just put a deep socket on it and unscrew it. The ones I've seen that DON'T have this hex unscrew with very little effort.

Some even have an internal hex (allen wrench).

Unless you can find two 20mx1.5 nuts cheap, the cost of a box is probably near an internal pipe wrench of the appropriate size. I would figure a way to do it ..first I'd try a set of needle nose through the center and try and exert enough outward force to turn the thing. Then I'd wrap it with something semi soft just to protect the threads and use a set of channel locks or vise grips. This is a perfect deal for an appropriate sized EZ-out (not the hobby grade type).
 
Another option might be to thread two nuts onto the nipple and lock them against each other. Then go after the nut closest to the block with the proper sized open end wrench.
 
Make sure your engine block threads match the new mopar stud. I didn't like the implication that every block has been tapped with the same thread size.

If the stud fits, the 51516 sized filter is more popular and almost the same size as the 51329 filter.
 
You may have something there undummy. Most are the same internally and externally, but there are exceptions. The 3.8 Ford 24 valve Duratec has 3/4-16 external threads ..but the internal thread is something else.

I would imagine that the Honda is the same however. If anything, they would have converted to an SAE/AN thread for the American market ..they didn't. Ford probably did it for reduced part numbers.
 
I'm with Gary, put a rag over the threads and rip'er off with a pipe wrench. This also works well on pesky faucets, etc. that loosen on a regular basis.

Thanks all for the info.

I looked up the Wix 51516. The book says it has a gasket OD of 2.734 and ID of 2.430. The stock filter gasket has an OD of about 2.5 and and ID of about 2.1 (measured).

I would worry that the seating surface on the blook is too small for the larger garket OD with the 51526 and it might leak.
 
measure the mating surface on the block. They are always wider then the gasket. If you cross reference enough filters you'll see that one filter will have your higher numbers ..for the lower number swap (did I say that right?). That is, as far as some filter manufacturers are concerned ..they both work in that application.
