Did a 180 mile trip.. pretty close hand calculated

I went out and shot the Moon from my backyard. The Moon was still low in the sky so there's a lot of atmospheric distortion and haze washing out the detail. I'll try again when the Moon is high in the sky to minimize those effects. Two bats swooped past me and I did hear an owl.

Base ISO (100), f/5.6, 1/160 sec
OOC jpg, scaled to 1024x768 pixels with Unsharp Mask applied
GX85 with an ancient Nikkor 500mm f/5.6 fixed aperture mirror-reflex lens. With the small sensor size of the GX85 this lens is equivalent to a 1,000 mm focal length in terms of magnification.

Just some of my over 600 DVD/Blu-Ray collection. More on the way too. Coworker sent me a picture yesterday of his collection that he doesn’t want anymore so bringing them all in to me including some VHS. Then 3 more DVD from eBay. I think I’ve got a bit of an addiction but at least it’s not anything bad lol. These are just the ones that are easily accessible. The one downside to this hobby is that it takes up so much space of the ones sitting just here I’ve probably seen 85% of them. Most were given to me by coworkers or bought very very cheaply off marketplace or Craigslist or eBay.

I didn't say anything about post. I wanted to see a comet picture your wife took with her R7, a camera with an ISO_invariant sensor that gives a very clean, much less noisy image in low light. I was just interested in seeing how the picture taken with the R7 would compare to your image from the K-7.
I reviewed her images, she didn't use a shutter delay so the images had shake. Neither She nor I are experienced with astrophotography. Both of these cameras have a crop sensor (APS-C) I am not aware if her Canon is iso invariant (Sony alpha 7?). We don't shoot raw.

Your mom looks quite young!

I was hoping for an answer to what you meant by 'image brightening" in your first reply.

Best places I’ve found DVD’s/VHS tapes is estate sales, yard sales and garage sales. Most of mine I paid 25-75 cents

Those are great places too. Around here most of the pawn shops and antique stores have them for $1-$2 as well and occasionally more if it’s some of the harder to get ones. My Salvation Army thrift store sells VHS for 25 cents each and DVDs and Blu-Ray for $1-$2.

^^^ Why is the Moon round, but the Earth is flat. 🙃 😄
I'm pretty sure both, Earth and the Moon, are hollow. I have see those the docu-drama Nazis at the Center of the Earth* and legendary auteur Roland Emmerich's masterpiece Moonfall. 😁

*it's The Asylum's best movie without a doubt

In addition to a tripod, self-timer I use one of these:
- if available, the electronic first-curtain shutter setting, will prevent shutter shock
- if available. fully electronic shutter will prevent shutter shock also but may have an unsuitable exposure time limit and may. drop the image from 14 or 12 bit to 10 bit.
- or use the B setting and a hat to control exposure time 🎩

In your post you mentioned her Canon R7 which is ISO-invariant. Many cameras are now either near or altogether ISO-invariant. It is very useful because the noise level is not affected by what I can only refer to as image "brightening" in post.

Your mom looks quite young!
She still does in her early 70s.

I didn't see a question but only a statement. I was making an assumption based on your gripes about the noise level in your picture. Noise depends on the amount of photons captured and the amount of brightening that was applied. I assumed you didn't capture enough light and had to brighten the image which would have increased noise. Faint night sky objects do not lend themselves to out-of-camera JPGs.

There are two types of noise: luminance noise and chroma noise.

Luminance noise is grain-like and can be reduced with noise reduction. Cameras have usually NR settings and they tend to be ok for JPG output but they are not ideal and offer no control as they are presets.
Chroma noise comes with luminance noise and is due to imperfect demosaicing in the processing pipeline and can be fairly easily removed to a large degree . That helps a lot with the clean appearance of an image. Chroma noise appears as colored splotches in dark areas that should be smooth.

Noise increases with less light (dark areas/shadows, and lowlight images, underexposure and required brightening of the image) and with a higher gain setting ("ISO")

With an ISO-invariant sensor, as with any type of imaging sensor, noise increases as the amount of light decreases but brightening the image does not increase the noise. That's why this type of sensor has become increasingly popular over the last decade.

Astrophotography is very technical. A friend who's a astronomer (uni teacher) has shown me his equipment at his place of employment and at his house. I'm just happy if I capture evidence.

The libraries here cleared out majority of their movies. They sold them all at a sale about 2 years ago. The ones they do have are like kids movies that I already have.

Earth must be pretty thick to be flat and also hollow. 🙃:D
Not really. If the Earth is only 5% of its diameter or 80 miles thick with a 20-mile deep crust that leaves a 40-mile high hollow space for millions of Morlocks. They won't be running out of air anytime soon. And once they start coming up for a breather we will be playing Whack a Morlock. Isn't that right, Cuddles? Go, get that Morlock." Since I am now talking to my dog I should probably call it a day.

So it would be possible to dig a tunnel through the "center of Earth" and come out on China. Can't be any hot molten rock where those Merlocks live. 🙃
