Well, here you go. Same day as the other pictures. Prime time for elephant seals is Jan and Feb. Most that remain are only pups. Mom's don't give their babies much time to make it on their own, maybe two weeks. Pups have only a 50% survival rate overall. Looking at the remaining pups yesterday, you can already tell which ones will survive.

To those of you unfamiliar with these beasts, in prime season the beach is literally 90% covered with seals. The male bulls are massive and can IIRC weigh a ton or more. They're huge beasts, nasty beasts. They fight for territory and females. The females are there to reproduce and no sooner do they have a pup than does some nasty sob bull gets them pregnant again. Nature is a tough place.

Last month I saw elephant seals at Año Nuevo and Fitzgerald. I was there to surf so no pictures. I took the picture below at Drakes Beach, Point Reyes. I have seen bulls come into the parking lot and sidle up next to cars. When they are lying prone on the beach at dusk it's easy to confuse one with a log. When you almost trip over them the log comes alive and is suddenly taller than you. They are loud and they stink. They are awesome creatures. Bulls can be over 5,000 pounds.

Got this surprise in the mail a few weeks ago from VW. It's a 6X9 glass plaque with the build date and VIN. I edited out the last few digits of the VIN. I bought the car on Jan 8th.

Sweet! My buddy and I have loved the GTI since inception. I’m sure GLI is similar. I last drove a rental in 2015 with the DSG.

My 10 y.o. is a chip off the old block. He came to me after school and said, "I want the tire back on mommy's car." I guess he doesn't appreciate it having a donut :ROFLMAO:

Smart kid. They're basically meant to get from the scene of a flat to the tire store and most people drive over 50mph which is the intended maximum safe speed, printed on the sidewall I think.

Just recently the topic of glass polishing came up and I remembered a project that I was working on way back when I was still in high school. The project concerned the manufacturing of a reflector telescope. I knew I had a few pieces from that project in a box and I found the box today. I remember grinding with ever finer griot and lapping glass blanks as precisely as possible. All sorts of measuring devices were used to ensure the surface was properly ground and finished to a very tight tolerance of less than 25 nanometers. The glass was then silvered and used in the construction of the telescope. It's been over 30 years so the details are hazy.

Counterclockwise from the top right: lapping stone, glass blank, glass blank after having been finished on both sides - green glass for probably no reason, partially lapped glass blank, silvered mirror - that one was not perfect so I go to keep it You can't tell in the picture but this is not a flat but a concave mirror.

Interestingly Costco said the tire is not repairable. It was odd as if a screw was bent over back? But they said it’s two screws.

Here’s where I do the math in my head. Months ago this happened and it was $104 pro rated for a $249 tire. This time it’s $125. Did we wear away $21 worth, doesn’t feel right but at any rate this way we can have 2 tires about the same on one axle. We had 1 new tire and 3 others at 27k of wear…AWD too…

See the oddity?
