The first McDonald’s restaurant was opened in 1948 in San Bernardino California. Today we tend to think of McDonald’s as the pioneer fast food franchised restaurant. But by the time that first McDonald’s opened, there were already over 100 Dairy Queens.

In 1938 in Moline, Illinois, John Fremont McCullough and his son Alex developed a way to make soft-serve ice cream. They convinced a friend to offer the product at his ice cream store in Kankakee, Illinois, and it was an immediate smash hit with his customers. Realizing they had a great business opportunity but needing a better way to dispense the ice cream, the McCulloughs soon discovered a freezer invented by Harry Oltz of Hammond, Indiana that dispensed a steady flow of ice cream. The rest, of course, is history.

The McCulloughs opened the first “Dairy Queen” (taking its name from the term the elder McCullough used for “cow”), in Joliet, Illinois on June 22, 1940, eighty-three years ago today. By 1947 they had over 100 franchised locations and just three years later they had over a thousand. Today there are more than 6,000 Dairy Queen locations, in 27 countries.

The first American fast food chain restaurants were White Castle, and that is a story for another day.

Much better ice cream at Fosters Freeze. My Grandpa would bring us a container each of vanilla and chocolate

Phoenix life...14 years living in the desert and this is the mildest May and June I can remember, the weather this year has been great but the local news gave a reminder of what could come. Also amused by that 1 degree dewpoint.

That's cool (sorry) ... Texas boosted DQ in a big way (check numbers on that) - when I was young - our small town had two DQ's ... and one was just torn down and replaced with a nicer new one ... in the meantime none of the bigger fast-food joints have had two stores in my small town ...

Added a new hat to the collection today. NOS from the 1997 World Series champions the Florida’s Marlins. Back when they were still the Florida Marlins. I personally like the logo better than what they have now as the Miami Marlins. Will be ordering hats for the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend as we are going to a Pittsburgh Pirates game in July. San Francisco Giants @ Pittsburgh Pirates. We might go to more than one. I at least want to go ahead and get the hats I can get a shirt when I’m there but can’t go without a hat. No one will see me without a hat lol. If anyone knows or is familiar with PNC Park let me know. Trying to figure out parking and everything and looking for a hotel that isn’t so expensive. Wish the Padres were at Pittsburgh I’d be rooting for them lol. Pirates are probably my third favorite team.
I have a few pirates hats already worn in some. Been to PNC Park before few times. We always parked near stadium for cheap and walked. Hotels are going to be pricy anywhere in any city. Best view I and others say. Think it’s rated #4 on best ballparks.

HaHa ... I buy Dukes at Walmart - Wayne pointed out that our most famous BBQ place makes potato salad with Duke's !
(Donna's is better though) ...
My Wal Mart has all varieties of Dukes. Hope to try it soon. Not a coleslaw but the gf will find delicacy to put it into. 😍
