Thoughts on these "resurfaced" Rotors

You think that a chain parts store employee knows how to use a caliper or a micrometer and knows what minimum thickness specs are?
You should be grateful that they know how to turn a rotor without getting their fingers ripped off.
All the O'Reillys in my area have new brake lathes that are almost like mini enclosed machining centers.

Not saying it's fool proof because nothing is, but it helps, provided the operator just cares a little

Whoever cut those is new to the job. They should have known that with them being so close to min spec that they wouldn't make the cut.

I personally would run them as I am very easy on brakes.... I would not put them on the wife's car though as she can tear up brakes in a week

Also OP there's a ton of "Auto Extra" closeout rotors on RA right now if you're ok with inexpensive, new rotors. Many are well under $20 so even after shipping it can be a good deal

People are missing that OP states he now has pulsating under heavy braking. This would drive me nuts.

Also OP talk to the store Mgr. If no results speak with the DM. Not joking

That looks pretty bad to me. I'd hate to pay for that... that said, if I put them on in the fall, by spring I bet I could have them look "normal" to me, once salt hits them. I'd keep an eye on them, as they might chew up the pads fast--but if you have to do new pads and rotors no matter what, might as well run them.

That said, sounds like it's pulsing. If it's having issues, check to make sure the rotors are sitting flat on the hub, no runout--maybe leave the calipers on and spin the wheel, and see if the rotor has runout. If there's no crud behind the disc, it might just be best to toss now and reuse the pads.

I got 100 dollar rotor for 45 bucks
The rotors that I put on a couple months ago were bought 8 years ago on sale for chump change too

'Pad slapping' is pretty standard in Europe. We don't get half as obsessed as changing discs or resurfacing discs on every pad change as you guys do over there. If it brakes well and doesn't squeal then I'd just run it.
I usually do pad slaps, happy to get 100kmiles/5 years out of pads. But rotors tend to be looking kinda nasty around them, at least in my experience.

This one I thought had lived long enough. I had garaged it for a couple of weeks, it didn't like that, you can see where it decided to seize. Braking surface, where it's still exists, shows that it was still pretty new. I was bummed. Lots of life left.

This seems normal. Grooves aren't that deep.

This one clearly has low miles but sat a lot... to me, it looks a bit questionable. Pretty sure I replaced this one.

That's why I kinda laugh when people talk about getting coated rotors, or painting their calipers... that might be fine in some areas, around here it's just a losing battle if it's a winter driver. I accept that my stuff spends 6 months of the year disintegrating, just comes with climate.

Im definitely putting a coated rotor on my summer project car, because aesthetics. (Im also painting the calipers but the cerakote stuff is VERY resistant to rust).

I think there are cases when coated rotors do makes sense. Some pad and rotor combos last forever and wear like iron. You want everything to last as long as possible because rust will probably eat the brakes before pads wear out any way. Especially the newer rotors with directional veins, you want to keep them free of rust scale for air flow and heat radiation.
My ford flex brakes get pushed to their absolute limit in the little PA/NY/NJ triangle of constant valley descents, and that air flow and performance matters.

This coating things is Ouroboros.
We used to ship these rotors from China with oil coating to prevent rust during the sea journey. EU had new regulations so they had to come up with the water based geomet type coating and charge extra for that since scale of economy started to push it here too.
That sounds expensive! What do we do?! Call it a premium line and rust proof and charge the customer extra!
Hey that guy over there is kicking our ass in sales! what do we do? Well they have this anti rust coating? Oh yeah! Get billy bob over there to zinc coat our crap and lets market it as premium rust proof rotor too!

I got two rotors for a '99 Ram 1500 4x4 just this morning for $56 shipped.

OR for six bucks less I could pull what's on there, send to O'Reilly to be turned, wait for them to be returned and then hope they're ok.

Yeah, I'll just pay the extra $6 and have new

I would have went with Oreiley! Just look at the beautiful fish scale on the outer edges of the rotor! In the custom watchmaking world that is called Guilloche and is highly sought after!

I plan on running my ebc rotors twice, as long as they aren’t pulsing when the time comes. I’ll probably paint the hats and vanes to pretty them up a bit. Every Oem rotor I’ve ever used was needing replaced by 50k, didn’t matter if it was ford, Chevy, Volvo or Nissan. I thought about cryo treated rotors but can’t stomach the price.
