Thoughts on BG MOA oil additive? I’m under the impression that oil additives are just snake oil. When I worked as a mechanic, we used BG for various things, but I’m unsure if it is actually worth using. Most oil additives are just thickeners from my understanding

I'm of the opinion that a quality, fully-formulated oil does not need any addition stuff.

Any "additive" would only be helpful if one had to buy junk oil and boost it just as a short-term solution.
Ex: You're driving in Nowhere USA and you're down 2 quarts, and you buy some non-API lube just to keep the pickup from sucking air and cavitating the pump, and only then would I use an "additive" to boost an inferior oil.

As others have noted, outside of unusual circumstances or just for entertainment, no decent oil should need an additive. Given how complex current oils are, I am very leery about adding anything to them. That said, I am running 2 bottles of LiquiMoly MoS2 (13 qt sump) as we speak at the strong direction of the gentlemen who reground my cams and rocker followers. After ~500 miles, back to straight Redline.

I’ve used MOA in every gas vehicle I’ve owned for the last 15 years with every oil change. Both new and high mileage vehicles. Still use it to this day.

I worked at a dealership almost 20 years ago and I remember a rep coming in and doing several tests with different BG products. I remember one was a test with some kind of acid and the oil with MOA wasn’t affected, compared to regular motor oil.

I’ve always thought they had good products

My UOA came back with high sodium IIRC. Blackstone said to check for coolant leak/headgasket etc. It was the MOA. I sent a VOA to confirm and then a new UOA after 2nd run without it.

It came with other stuff I ordered and used like BG44K, SynchroShift II, EPR, Fuel Dryer.

Like anything else, there are good products, and worthless products. To categorically declare ALL additives are snake oil like some do is a popular falsehood.

There are some good products, effective if used only in certain circumstances. Its not mutually exclusive like some want to believe. Quality oils do not need enhancements in most all cases. BG has a great reputation, if the applications of it are correct.
