Thought this was interesting; optical illusion.

Depends how you define "invention" and "discovery"...

It's a discovery in that it describes what we see -- as one would hope, as it is defined by what we see in the first place.

It's an invention in that it is a product of our own minds.

Really reinforces how "reality" can be far from what we perceive.

I happened to read your signature and got to thinking.

This is an age old argument. I fall in the discovery camp as well. My father who has a Masters in Applied Mathematics disagrees. He says that the nature of Math is there waiting to be discovered but it took man and the invention of mathematics to describe it.
Always thought it was an interesting argument....like the chicken and the egg.

To the OP, very, very cool thanks for posting this link.

No way I would guess that conclusion without studying it!
But the color in question is only 1/2 of the total color in any spiral. We really are not being fooled that much.

As to the slight against people seeing UFOs:
I DO see UFOs all the time. UFOs are not alien being spacecraft. UFO means UNIDENTIFIED Flying Object. They abound.

This is my interpretation, but I would modify your statement by saying it is the relationships between objects in nature (not "math" itself) that needs to be properly described (as do many other things) It is only through mathematics this is possible.
