Those with 150,000 miles or more, check in

1991 Ford Ranger 3.0 I purchased new. Changed oil at 20k with Amsoil 5w-30 synthetic, filter every 10k (Fram). Original engine still running great when I sold it with 374,000 miles on it, never any internal engine work. Oil consumption about 1qt every 2500 miles the whole time I owned it.

Edit: Just checked the records, first 100k was dino oil at 3k intervals...

I have enjoyed reading this thread.

My 20-year-old elder son bought my father-in-law's 1969 Chevy Camaro, which has over 170K miles on its original 307 V-8 engine. My parents bought it new for the princely sum of $3600, and when my mother's M.S. forced her to quit driving in 1990, she sold it to my wife's father for about $300. It has always had dino oil, mostly on a by-the-book 4-month OCI. (The owner's manual specifies every 4 months or 6K miles, or a shorter interval for severe driving conditions.) The engine has recently begun to leak some oil, and it could probably benefit from a valve and ring job, but these old Detroit iron powerplants are so overengineered and understressed that they can probably run forever. The body is a rustbucket, but the car is a classic, and my son really enjoys it. So far, our only major expense has been close to $1000 for a front end rebuild triggered by a drum-to-disc front brake conversion. (1969 was the last year one could buy a car with 4-wheel drum brakes, and the new brake system is a HUGE improvement over the original.)

'90 Toyota 4X4, 178,000 with 10W30 Pennzoil, 5K OCI and what ever filter the Sappy Lube places used. Consumed about a quart every 5K near the end. I discovered it was three quarts low, never got a warning light or anything until I had cooked a bearing going up a long mountain road. I still don't understand what happened since I had just changed the oil 2,000 before. Sad because most of the engine looked good inside.

I now change my own oil and found BITOG after the rebuild. I framed the "burnt rod" as a reminder in my garage to check the oil, etc., etc.

My ranger just hit 150k It ran on Valvoline till about 100k then for the next 50k or so I tried random stuff Pennzoil, GC, Mobil DC, and finally settled on Motorcraft 5w30. Burns no oil.

My G/F celica we sold a few montha ago had 300k on 5k intervals a quick lube. It bunt around a quart every month so it usually got whatever was lying around.

May have already posted awhile back... we have over 180k miles on a 93 Taurus that we purchased new. It had primarily dealer oil changes for the 1st 100k or so miles, probably Motorcraft dino at 3k miles as we just followed the recommended oil change sticker that they'd leave in the car. Started using a blend of adding some synthetic Havoline to whatever was being put in at 120k miles or so. Now using a blend of Mobil 1 T&S and Mobil 10W-30 with Purolator filters. We live on a hill and driving up and down the hill a lot can make for adding a qt every two weeks sometimes, maybe 500 miles in 2 weeks, while it only seems to burn a qt every 1k miles on road trips.

At around 140k miles when having some work done a dealer mechanic asked what I did for a living, and he was surprised that I had an office job as the car was in such good shape. He said most white collar types seem to just drive it until it until something breaks, they neglect regular maintenance, and the cars don't last very long.

1997 Ford F-150 with 4.6 liter
175000 miles, had it since 93000 miles
0-93000 10w40 valvoline with fram filters
93000-current castrol gtx 5w30 with purolator filrters
dosent smoke but burns .5 to 1 quart between 3000 mile changes

1989 Honda Accord with 2.0 liter
166000 miles, had it since 100000 miles
0-100000 quick oil change place every 5000 miles
100000-current castrol gtx with purolator filters
smokes like a chimney but dosent burn any oil

dont understand it

1994 honda accord-4 banger 2.2L

185k on it

first 170k-dealership oil changes/cheap 10 dollar/fram style- oil changes 3kOCI

last 15k changed to mobil 1 for 7k OCIs

no burning, car still runs great, gonna keep it for another 40k!

1995 GMC Jimmy 4.3L 170,000K
The first 69,000 miles were on 5/10W-30 Valvoline dino, the remainder on 5W-40 Rotella synth. Oil changes at 3,000 on the dino, and 5,000 on the synthetic. Never been inside the engine, and it runs like new.

1986 Chevy K20 with 5.7 210k when sold after 19 years of construction and snow plowing all the years, 5-8 hours per snow fall, never opened, only carb rebuild, water pump and fuel pump. Used 10w40 (1qt per 1k at end) dino Kendall every 3k. 1988 Pontiac Bonneville 3.8 with 230k when sold, never opened or repairs, used Quaker State, GTX,Kendall, 10w30 every 3k. 1994 Pontiac Bonneville 3.8 with 155k when sold, used a little oil, about 1/2 per 3k. Got to love GM's

1990 Acura Integra with 178K plus miles. Bought used 13 years ago. Regular dino oil changes at Acura dealership until about 6 years ago when switch to M1 5W-30 and 10W-30.Top up about 1/4-1/2 quart between 5K OCI. Just finished ARX cleaing phase.

1992 Honda Accord with 117K miles bought new. Regular dino oil changes at Honda dealership until changed to M1 4 years ago. Does not use oil.

1987 Acura Legend, 353K miles, original engine, second owner.

Castrol GTX 10w-40 from almost new to 272k miles, Fram filters. OCI of 3k miles.

Chevron Delo 15w-40 from 272k miles to present, Fram, Honda and NAPA filters. OCI of 5k miles.

Engine uses 1qt. every 4500 miles.

Delo 400 has quieted the typically noisy lifters in this engine quite nicely.

My old business partner and his wife had a full sized long body Ford van that they used for highway deliveries. Dino 10W-30 every 3k. They sold it to a mechanic that they knew with 450K on the original engine. As far as I know the only time it ever quit was when it stripped the fiber timing gear which is a known weak link the the otherwise pretty much bullet proof 300 in. Ford inline 6. I don't know what it's compression test looked like but it still ran ok. The guy rebuilt the engine and may still be driving the thing for all I know.

1989 Pontiac 6000 3.1L--194,000 with little need of repair except reoccuring water pump failure every 30-40K--still runs Great. Cheapest Car Quest filters and Pennzoil 10w-30 every 3K or so.

178K on a 95Roadmaster Wagon other than a little rust behind the wheels she is in great shape, engine is smooth as can be since using a few products I found out about from the guy that pointed me here.

My other car a 96 Caprice has 160K but I swapped engines(larger and lower milage) still a good car even though I drive her hard

. The only Caprice regularly seen at the local dragstrip

Correct me if I'm wrong

, but...

...I do believe this is the 1st post I've ever read that documents real-life, long term useage of an Xw20 oil in any engine.

So much for all that wailing and nashing of teeth a few years ago when 5W20 oils were 1st introduced predicting poor oil protection and wornout engines by 100,000 miles because of CAFE interests.

1994 Geo Prizm (Toyota Corolla) with the 1.6L engine.

Just rolled over to 159K today, I purchased it 99 weeks ago with 106k on the clock.

I've been running Mobil 1 5W30 with a change every 4 months, current fill is on about 5 months and 9400 miles.

From the records, the previous owner did either Chevy dealership service every 3-5K and then a local lube and carwash at about the same intervals with Mobil 5W30 or 10W30. I might use a quart in the 8-10K mile interval.

I'm switching to the M1 EP when I hit 160K and going for 15K or 6 month intervals.

Oh, and I use Purolator filters.

I am now trying 10,000/16000 oci with Mobil 1 0w20 (stockpiled a whole bunch) and Mobil 1 oil filter. Consumes 1/2 litre every 8000 kms. Fuel economy is still as good as it was when first purchased. 38 mpg or 6 litres/100 km.

My wife's parents bought her a '90 Pontiac Sunbird LE when it was only a year old or so. When we first started dating, it only had 20,000 miles on it. I started changing the oil in it for her. For years and years and close to 100k miles we ran QS 5w30 and Fram filters. After hearing the Fram horror stories, I swtiched to AC filters.

The car is about 200 miles shy of 150k, so I cheated a little. I switched to QS High Mileage 5w30 two years ago, and I ran 10w30 on the last interval. I've also been adding the Maxlife additive as well. I also used Duralube and Slick 50 back in the day. :)I'm currently using QS 5w30 HM with an STP filter.

The car still looks and runs like new. The little 2.0L is still as noisy as ever though. I changed the oil the other day, and 4 qts came out. It has never burned a drop of oil! The oil has always been changed at 3000 to 3500 miles.
This car has paid for itself many, many times! It has been on many, many, many long trips, and we have been far from easy on it also.
I use it as my beater now that my wife has a GTP.
