This tire is junk, right?

My kid bought a low mileage 2021 (I think) M2, and it came with a set of Conti winter tires that are hardly used. Pressing him to sell them, because where we live, they won't get used. Just noticed this damage, though, so I presume this tire is junk. Not sure it's worth the hassle of trying to sell these things (the other 3). There is a community tire recycling event in two weeks, so I'm going to press the kid to dump them then unless someone changes my mind.

Yes, that tire is junk.

That tire's barely junk, and poorly photographed.

I've had tires hold air that have nicks in the inner flap of the bead, but once it goes around the corner to the sidewall the odds get much worse, and you seem to have a decent amount missing there.

I'd offer the three good tires up for $75 on marketplace, and take anything anyone would give you.

I donated my too old for me (6-7 years) with about 5/32" to a used tire joint. According to a couple comments from others they in my town they will actually give them to local students for like $15 to cover mount/balance. They sell others pretty cheap anyway. I've known many people that don't even make next paycheck never mind better tires. A little older, 5-6/32" to get someone to work for $20-30 may help them a lot.

In the last 2 months they got 8 winter tires from me. Probably getting 2 all season with 5/32" from daughters boyfriend if he doesn't get any craigslist/FB market bites.

Let's ask a tire engineer - @CapriRacer

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

If there are cords exposed, the tire is toast. Those cords will wick air into the carcass and eventually blow the rubber off the cords.

If the cords are not exposed, then there might be enough rubber to protect those cords from getting too much pressurized air and they might not separate.

What I see is that there is not much rubber left, so I recommend replacing the tire.

Looks like someone likely abused that M2 before. I'd get it closely inspected in other areas as well, especially alignment.

+1 on a new set of tires (with an alignment check/adjustment).
