This is why brake maintenance is good.

...which we don't have in Illinois...

This is what was left of a pad that I took off of the front end of the parents' Park Avenue.

When it started grinding against the rotor, Dad limped it home and parked it until I put a new set of pads on it.

The shiny blob is all that was left of the pad, and the shiny bottom edge was where it had just started grinding on the rotor.

Wish I had taken pics of the 87 Cherokee I had. When I got it (for free) after getting it running I drove it home (thankfully only across town). It was making a horrible grinding noise on the right front.

Took of the tire and saw a rotor with no outward "face" to it. The outside facing portion of the rotor WAS GONE! What was left of the pad (just the backing plate no actual friction material) was grinding against what was left of the cooling fins.

Pull the hardware, lubed the stuck caliper slides and put it back together with a new rotor and pads and thankfully all was fine after that and no damage was done to the caliper.

I guess you didn't see the truck go into crossing traffic and almost hit another two cars in the end.

I saw the video. I've also watched one car run into me head on, and another run into me from the side. It's a regular occurrence for idiot drivers to plow into others, for a multitude of reasons almost always involving negligence of some sort but rarely involving mechanical failure. I don't care what type of negligence it is. They should be adequately punished for it, not me.

My 17 dollar safety inspection is not a punishment. I'm glad they weed out the poorly maintained vehicles before they have a chance to kill somebody. Punishment after the fact is justified but too late.
