A few weeks ago Car and Driver posted an article on the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance. The overall theme of the article was how the performance, the comfort level and features such as the active LED headlights as well as the automatic high beams made a long drive considerably less stressful.

In the comments the suspected BITOG member posted,
“I have a Ford Escape PHEV and I got into an extremely high stress situation while getting lost on the complex road network around Miami International. I had to accelerate and maneuver across multiple lanes in traffic while keeping track of the many exits. The Escape performed marvelously. Its instant response to throttle inputs and maneuverability gave me a lot of confidence. While I was disappointed in myself for getting disoriented, I was extremely satisfied with the car, which cost $120,000 less and gets 20+ mpg more than the Mercedes. For that price, I also get a very good cruise control with lane keeping and automatic high beams. I don't have active headlights but I do have $120,000 in the bank. A fair trade.”

I replied,
“I'm currently cross-shopping the Escape PHEV and the S63 E Performance. Believe me, it's definitely not an easy decision to make.”

That's hilarious. Although the Ford Escape PHEV is an excellent vehicle and it was on the list of potential replacement vehicles for the Tesla if they had decided to total it instead of fixing it, I don't think ANYONE is cross-shopping a mainstream SUV with and AMG S63 despite the fact that both are plug-in hybrids LOL.

I wasn’t knocking the Escape PHEV in the slightest. I’ve since checked his profile and found that he also replied to a post discussing an R107 560SL on Bring a Trailer-
“My ‘under-engineered’ F100 survived 41 years of continuous use while requiring remarkably few repairs. Even after 300,000 miles, my interior looks nearly as good as the SL. The only thing not original is the seat cover.”

I've made comments like that but never in comparison to better/completely different/more expensive cars. Well maybe I have once or twice😁

I know it's a toilet but it's a very reliable toilet🚽🧻🏆🏁 just not an AMG.

^^Oh yeah, totally. But compared to other 'everyday cars', is this Ford actually desirable and full of long life + value?
Yes, why wouldn't it be? Ford learned how to do hybrids from Toyota. No it's not exactly the same parts and design but they learned the fundamentals from the people that practically invented hybrids. But when you buy the Escape you don't have to pay the "Toyota tax" plus you don't have to deal with Toyota's ugly, frustrating technology and infotainment.

Because so much of what's offered for sale today is garbage.
We speak often of shoddy design and shameless shortcuts in manufacturing.

There's nothing we can do about it but learn from others' experiences.
I'm at the earliest stages of thinking about modernizing our cars, so SUPER thanks for posting the links.

Even the hybrid (non plug in) flavors the Fords are a much better value.

And the RAV4's interior and tech looks 20 years old.
