Thinning the XD3 0w30...I have to do it.

You could always take the oil pan off and install a real oil pump.
I'm using a 50/50 blend of PC 0W30 and SAE 10W in two vehicles this winter.
A very important function of engine oil is to cool internal parts.
Therefore flow is more important than viscosity, or perhaps better stated, an inverse value of high viscosity.

Just as an update, no more startup knock detected and the engine does warm up a bit faster.

Really happy and I think I will stick to 3.25 qts XD3 0w30 and a quart of Mobil 1 0w20 for winter use.

full 4.25qt load of XD3 0w30 during the summer though.

MAybe the XD3 was really cleaning up this engine seeing this is the first time this oil has been in the truck since I did the Auto-RX treatment.

Interesting to see all the sludge already trapped in the filter only after that few kilometers.

I'm in agreement with the feller that said "oil pan heater". The heat will thin the oil for easier starts, decreased viscosity. Of course, there must be a lot I don't understand.....like 0W20 and 0W30 "SHOULD" act the same, since 0w=0w. 20 and 30 are summer numbers, right? Interesting stuff!

The one thing you need to know is the 0w is only thinner and capable of lower temperatures than a manufacturers equivelent 5w oil.

For instance Castrol Syntec 0w30 is capable of lower temps than a Syntec 5w30. The ony thing is that you cannot compare a Castrol Syntec 0w30 to a Mobil 1 0w30. They are completely different oils and actually the Mobil 1 5w30 is capable of lower temperature and thinner cold viscosities than a Castrol Syntec 0w30 or even the XD3 0w30 in my truck.

In this thread I used 0w20 seeing it was even thinner at colder temperatures than the 0w30 from Mobil 1 which is why I used it. I wanted maximum thinning for each volume unit used.

I hope this clarifies it a bit for you.
