Thinner oil = lower radiator coolant temp??

Just curious if using a slightly thinner oil (sacrificing some OP), would result in the water temperature of the coolant to fall slightly due to the fact the thinner oil will be absorbing more heat.

If too thicker oil is used, increased friction/heat build up, is then heat transferred to the water coolant and show up on the temp gauge of the radiator?

Or would the oil get hot instead?

i don't think so because rate of exchange in the radiator is much higher than between oil and cooling passages so at normal driving no diff. push those systems to their upper limits and and all bets are off

No, because there is a thermostate to keep the coolent at a constant tempeture as the oil temp goes up and down.

Thanks guys. Very true yes.

There could be slight variances in thermostat openings/closings of these older alfa engines.
Aftermarket thermostats versus NOS thermostats(fully open at 86).
Seen some alfas at a steady 80, mine at 82/83 degrees c.
(new rad/new thermostat also to rule out bad coolant system).
I guess the water pump could make a difference, note sure when it was last replaced.

But oil never gets above 90 c on the highway.

The true oil temperature would be higher than 90C in the block, but the water temperature will depend on the thermostat type. Thinner oils do cool better, but the difference between a 30 and 40 will only show up as a slight difference in oil temperature.
