Thinking of trading in the truck for a Tahoe...crazy?

Yup that's me, with the equity I have in the truck and the need for a legit 3 row SUV for up & coming summer road trips. This plus transporting my in-laws around seems be a future concern. Hard to do that with only 2 useable rows.

Saw a bunch of Tahoe/Yukons with under 100k for a decent price. Truck is sitting at 114k now and consuming a bit of oil, maybe 1 qt every 1.5 - 2k miles.

It would be from the K2XX generation in my price range and other than the AFM I can't find any glaring issues.

Third row is cramped. Bcs. solid axle the third row seats are really uncomfortable. That is why current generation has independent suspension in the back.

How many persons will be in the vehicle at max capacity? Do you have children who would sit in third row while your in laws are in the second row? If so, you might consider a Suburban or Yukon XL for more room. I agree that a light duty trailer to accompany the SUV would fit all your needs.
 
Trucks in my mind (and the market) keeps appreciating. Yours probably has another good 10-15 years before it will hit the point of depreciating value, but there is a remote chance it could then achieve collector status like the GMT400's oddly seem to have obtained.

In other words, I wouldn't sell it, just downgrade it to tertiary transportation, maybe even forget it exists for awhile. It was roughly 1 year ago I thought about selling my 26 year old GMT800, but since then I realized replacing it with another or even newer one would be unnecessary cost and stress.

Well, there's your answer. I see no problem other than getting a project trailer off the marketplace or somewhere for the side loads.
 
I would go with a Suburban but don't get the 6.2 engine. I have a Ford truck but I had a 99 Ford Expedition a few trucks ago and just loved that huge beast but it sucked a lot of gas with the 5.4 engine. Both the Suburban's and Expeditions are great choices.
 
Watch for rust on the K2XXs. The wax coating on the frames doesn't last long and the rear quarter panels and rockers seem to be rusting out on the earlier ones. Also transmission issues - my FIL has a 16 Yukon XL 5.3 he bought new and it's just over 100k, it's needed a new transmission, along with new AC system, new front control arms/tie rods, new air suspension in the back and new tail lights (condensation).

In the L87 engines GM will be replacing your 0w20 oil with 0w40.

I’d jump on a minivan also in this case. Passenger comfort, utility, it only lacks in machismo.

Suburbans are impressively reliable though, at least the 2000s ones were, but their back seats are for toddlers and midgets only. Hardly a third row at all. I know - I sat in one.
 
You want it, do it. Don't let people talk you up or down. Tahoe is a good size for what it is; only you know if it's a good fit. Well, you and the in-laws you stuff way in the back. 😁
