Thinking of getting a Dog

So buy a husky, a Kirby, and become an avid runner lol.

I do not have my heart set on a husky for those who have come down a little harsh. I asked the question to get owners opinions.

I have not owned a dog since I was 8 years old.

I have a friend with two Huskies. one is a little rambunctious. it is half malamute half Siberian. The other is much more calm and sweet. it is full Siberian.

My other friend has a Golden and it is a sweet dog.

another friends girlfriend has a blue heeler from the pound and it is mean...leaning toward not getting a dog someone else already abused and made un-trustworthy.

If i had to describe the huskies I've been around and worked with over the last 10 years is say NEUROTIC. If you want a large breed dog get a lab. Why people have to make it more complicated than needed. They and to a little lesser extent because of health iasues the golden retriever. They score the highest in temperament testing, that's why they make excellent guide and service dogs, the dogs for veterans with ptsd are 98% labs and goldens.

Why not an Alaskan Malamute. That's a REAL dog. Maybe too much dog. They may wear you out.

What do you want from the pet? Companionship, or guarding? Do you want a high energy dog? Any dog that is not exercised enough will chew up everything and have issues. More dominant breeds require you to be a strong owner, by that i mean confidence and the ability to set and maintain limits and boundaries. Decide what you want from the pet, how much you want to spend feeding and keeping it healthy at the vet.

Expenses to consider;
Food
Vacinations
Heartworm prevetative costs.
What kind of vacations you take, I.E. Boarding costs
Grooming costs if you get a dog that requires it.
Any fencing needs fixed or invisible fence.
Possible yard maintenace, dog pee kills grass, and if they are outside they wear a path in the yard. I have to seed and lime at least twice a year.

Other things to consider

Can you let it out every evening I.E. if you work way over, you may come home to dog piles.

Can you exercise the breed you select to keep them happy. A tired dog is a good dog! Your time every day, and yard size.

Do you have close neighbors, you don't want a dog that barks a lot and drives them nuts, and make them hate you.

Remember even in rain , bad weather, they still need to go out, and especially when young they still need exercise, or you will find your sofa chewed up!

think about the above things, and pick the size dog your home and yard can handle, then the temperament you want, then research health issues etc. I think some mixed breeds may have less health issues than pure breeds.

P.S. you need to keep money on hand for emergencies, injury, sickness or getting bitten by snakes, yellow jacket nests, or bitten by other dogs etc. I'd have $800 budgeted on hand for vet emergencies

Neighbor down the street has a husky, and the girl (22 y/o) lives in a very small home with a small amount of property in a small development, the dog is NOT friendly to any other dogs, and CONSTANTLY gets out of the house and runs at large attacking other dogs. Recently it almost bit another home owner that was walking her small dog, the dog was bitten, and the owner's dog out of fright bit her owner. The husky has attacked five dogs now. I wonder when it will kill one?

I agree dogs destroy houses and really the only way to get the house smelling fresh again is to replace the carpet.

I'm going to start another thread about this exact problem.

Oh so a dog from a breeder is less worthy of a life.
The best dog I've had happened to be from a breeder and i knew his full lineage and everything, i even knew if he was genetically prone to hip dysplasia. So i do recommend a breeder if its a breed you want and you've fully researched them. So sick of the self righteousness.

If people would get dogs from the pound instead of breeders, then breeders would not be as common or likely to breed so many puppies. Supply and demand. Of my last 5 dogs, 1 was from a breeder (Boston Terrier), the other 4 have all been rescue's (2 Boston Terriers, 1 Pug, 1 mut).
Most breeds have rescue shelters, so hit them up before buying a puppy. Many have already been house broken and trained.

There simply are no cats left he could be chasing in your neighborhood.

Neurotics seem to gravitate towards neurotic breeds such as the husky. Well centered rational people male/female single married, kids,no kids seemed to gravitate towards the golden retriever lab type dogs. Just my personal observation.

some people like show quality and a known lineage. I'm one of them.

Seriously, when looking for any pet, I would first look at rescue animals. Both my birds are rescues.

This Husky was a rescue dog. I can't believe the shelter actually adopted this dangerous animal out!

Go play with dogs and pups to get a feel for what sort of dog is right for you. We looked for a long time and were unlucky on several waitlisted pups that were right for us before our now 10 month old black Lab mix stole our hearts. We've watched her grow from 15 lbs to 60 lbs. Great dog, still has a lot of puppy energy that we deal with by running/walking her several times a day and taking to the local dog park to socialize with other dogs.

There are a few Huskies that go to the dog park. The older one that's often there when we're there is a people-oriented dog. She doesn't much care for other dogs. She leaves them alone as long as they leave her alone. But is affectionate to the regular humans, and doesn't go far from her human. X10 on the shedding comments, I'm always covered in Husky hair coming back from the dog park. Mine doesn't care, though.

A lot of rescues aren't rescues at all. They are just breeders with tax free status. Check out the digs of some of your "rescues", at least breeders don't hide the fact.

I don't know any breeders who will euthanize their dogs if people don't buy them.

Shelters will, if they're at capacity.

Also, you can pick a dog with a complimentary personality, rather than a particular appearance.

So, why not? Save a life rather than pay a breeder.
