Things That Make You Go, "Hmmmm......"

Some of the main things in quantum mechanics that are head scratchers is quantum entanglement, zero point energy, Casimir effect, quantum tunneling, superposition, etc.

I met someone once whose last name was Casimir, I refrained from asking her if she was familiar with her namesake, the Casimir effect.

You can't travel faster than the speed of light, but the universe overall is expanding and there are are galaxies so far away that the space between them is expanding faster than you can actually go there even at the speed of light due to dark energy. Basically you bake a loaf of bread and the two ends of the loaf expand away from each other and the distance becomes so great at some point that you can never reach the other end even at the speed of light.
Or, the other side of a black hole :D

Well it's unknown if classical or quantum mechanics still work inside a black hole. Black hole information loss paradox is another one of those head scratcher and so are the proposed solutions to it. Gravity is still one thing we don't really understand. The standard model which pretty much describes the working of the universe as we know it doesn't include dark matter, dark energy or gravity.

You and member/MOD Astro14 would probably have a great conversation. He's an Astrophysics expert.

There's still lots of amazing things going on. The Higgs boson was discovered in 2012 and the Nobel prize for it was given in 2013, this had been theorized since the 70s. Einstein predicted gravitational waves and they weren't detected until 2015 and now we know the heavier metals beyond iron comes from the collision of neutron stars. Bell's inequality wasn't confirmed until 2015 although it was a theory since the 60s. The results from the James Webb telescope could be really amazing.

It's just too bad we're not allowed to talk about some science because the mods deem it political.

I'm REALLY going Hmmmmmm...... at this reply! 🤷‍♂️

👍👍👍

Just as long as we don't go all Flat Earther to try to explain the apparent contradictions of gravity. Those buffoons think that there isn't actually gravity or physics, well, they just think that whatever we think is going on is easily explained by electromagnetism... they use a lot of big words but, they think ridiculous things like birds should not be able to fly in the sky and fish swim at same time.. if I go into it anymore that will take brain cells away from people lol. (Nevermind that water introduces buoyancy... oy.)

I want to go and re-watch VHS tapes about learning about the galaxies in the sky from when I was a kid and about how gravity is simply a pulling down force, introduced by a spinning object. Maybe that's why Flat Earthers try to sound educated with a big words mean nothing rebuttal of gravity.

There are still natural wonders! And, disclaimer, I've never been a scientist, people smarter than me are!

Another thing. Why do impossible, irrational, and is there imaginary (same as impossible?) numbers exist in math.

For example, the square root of a negative number ?

How many times have you ever NEEDED to find the square root of a negative number ?

The oxymoron “man bun”.
