I have a 95 caravan with about 235,000 miles 3 litre engine. Im currently running havoline 10w30 and I would like to go a little thicker because of the lifters pecking from time to time. But im unsure of what weight I should run. Any suggestions would be very helpful. I would like to try to avoid a lifter change because of mileage. It doesnt burn any oil just leaks about a quart between changes. and it also holds decent oil pressure. And I would like to stick with havoline if possible.

Havoline is a good oil and a 30 weight should be enough....is there direct evidence that going to a 40 will cut back on "pecking"?

Where is "Morehead"?

Maybe dump a full bottle of VSOT to thicken the oil (and add a ton of moly) to see what happens.

Perhaps you could try a 15w40 if you don't live in a cold place.

Morehead is located in ky. No im not sure thicker oil will stop the pecking but maybe quite it down a little and slow down the front seal leak. I plan to do a rebuild on the engine this spring but I may just throw in a seal and lifters and see just how many miles it will go.

Having had an '88 Voyager with this engine, I can say that a 10w40 will do you no harm to run in it. In fact, during the summer towing and loading season, I ran 20w50 in it with no hiccups, good oil pressure, and no more consumption than normal.

I switched it to synthetic later in it's life (after 100K miles) and stuck with that until the valve seals went for the second time. After that, regular petroleum based 'till the cooling system kicked the bucket at about 400K miles.

I run a 50/50 mix of Havoline 5w30 and Delo 15w40 in my wife's 2.4L Caravan -- basically a "heavy" 10w30 with a good dose of moly and ZDDP to spare. Zero consumption, zero leaks -- smooth & quiet.

The HM Havoline is 12cST I think, as opposed to the normal, which is what? 10 or 10.5? So it's thicker, but not quite a 40, doesn't cost but about $2.50 a quart and may be just what you need.

I may take a shot at the HM Havoline. You know before I stumbled across BITOG I never thought twice about oil, just poured in whatever I had. Now I can't hardly sleep at night thanks BITOG. No really its a great site very usefull information.

Careful with that Havoline HM - not so good in cold temps, at least not the 10w30.

Have it in a sister's trailblazer right now - grabbed by mistake, meant to use the 5w30. Got down to 8F late last week, truck tapped horribly, my sister wanted to cry.

I'm thinking they'll be dumping it this weekend.

Morehead, KY is home of Morehead State University, where both my mom and dad went to school (and uncle and cousin...)

We live in Indy now, but my family is back there in the tri-state area. We've always used 10W-40 and still do. Of course, we use it our old German cars. I've not found a problem using 10W-40. I'd use Havoline or Pennzoil.

The havoline High Mileage 5w30 or 10w30 would give you a little thicker oil. It is 12.0 cst @ 100C the conventional Havoline 10w30 is 10.3 cst @ 100C.
The synthetic blend havoline 10-w30 would give you 10.8 cst @100C.

If you can find Castrol 0w30 is also 12+ cst @ 100C.
