Every time I hit the bump feed, an unknown amount of string gets wasted by the string cutting blade on the guard. I'm tempted to stop bump feeding the string and start advancing the string by hand for cutting it to length with wire cutters. That string is getting expensive.

I bet the waste of trimmer string is a killer? I used to weed wack 3 acres yearly for fire safety.

I've never installed the guard on any trimmer I have ever owned. It also lets me run the string a little "long"

I guess if I felt I needed the guard, I'd just remove that little blade.

Here's 90 feet of the stuff for $20....

That's a hair over 20¢ a foot.....

Here's 140 feet for $10 or 7¢ a foot...

C'mon man...

^ That is quite expensive, you can get other brands in bulk under 10 cents a foot. EDIT: Never mind, I see you already found some cheaper.

What if you just wait longer to bump it and bump it one fewer times? What I do is buy an extra spool so I can keep a spare loaded with string, in my pocket, so if I run out I can just pop the other on in 20 seconds and keep working. In spring when the vegetation is quite gooey I also have a rag in my pocket to wipe the green goo off my hands that comes from changing the spool.

If I wait too long to bump it, then the string breaks off inside the spool and I have to take the spool apart.

I've been using that Echo Black Diamond string. The stuff is wicked sharp but it's expensive as heck.

100% truth ... the stuff hates being dried out

Good to know.

That's the way they work.

The problem with removing the cutter blade on the guard is, the string will just slap and beat the heck out of the guard every time you bump feed. Like said above, the key is using good flexible trimmer line that reduces the need to bump feed.
