The Size Of Touchscreens Is Getting Ridiculous!

The instrument cluster isn't a touchscreen. Just a digital screen, which is controlled by hard buttons, thumbwheels, capacitive touches, etc....

These screens are obviously a massive distraction and a public menace! No serious industry where operators would be expected to pay extreme attention to their surroundings at high speeds with hundreds of peoples lives depending on them would ever have so many screens in front of them.

8" is about the norm today.... but that's not the point of the thread, it's the huge screens as pointed on the 1st post.

the older MIB-II units, 5.8" to 6.5" isn't that big, and tiny by today's standards.

This size is not what I was referring to... this is a small screen.. I was referring to the larger tablet size ones like in the Teslas , higher end Ram Trucks and the new Tundra.

Distraction isn't a matter of size alone. Graphics could be same, brightness could be same at any size.
As mentioned earlier, besides poor graphics and inadequate dimming, the main issue is replacing hard
buttons with soft keys.

Not clear what is so distracting about touch screen unless you choose to touch it. I don’t fiddle our VWs and find the Google Map/Apple Play nice when I need it.

The vehicle uses normal controls for volume and HVAC.

Yes, it's failed ergonomically. Sat in a Mk8 GTI yesterday.
Nothing wrong with the Mk7.5 though. A good example for touchscreens aren't bad in general. It all depends on what you make out of it.

I have no problem with touchscreens...that are appropriately sized. They have been Americanized to American standards and the large ones are absolutely ridiculous. Owners have no idea how much they will cost to replace. Good luck!

I guess you'd just have to experience it for yourself. This isn't distracting to me at all. The screen is dim and extremely clear. This is because it's a high quality screen.

What's distracting is my grandfather's 14' Grand Cherokee screen, it's low resolution and too bright.

Hey, at least VW went for touchscreen HMI, versus the controller on Audi’s MMI. The most recent Lexus RX has a similar dash layout - it’s also touchscreen, Lexus dumped their Remote Touch HMI for that and it’s a sign those controllers are going away in “luxury” cars.

That aircraft won't move one inch without 2 pilots to operate all that crap. And God knows how many flight controllers watching their every move. On the tarmac, or in the air.

Even private planes are like that, and are easily piloted by a single person. There is plenty of Class E and G airspace where you don’t have ATC giving you minute by minute updates and these guys handle it all by themselves just fine.

Stop trying to compare aircraft to cars. That's a ridiculous analogy and you know it. Aircraft are kept thousands of feet apart. They don't drive in bumper to bumper traffic. They don't fly through school zones, bus stops, and railroad crossings. They don't have dogs, kids, and bicycles darting out in front of them. They don't have stop signs and intersections every 2 blocks, that force them to come to a complete stop within inches of each other. And they have a complete network of controllers monitoring their every move, both on the ground, and in the air. All of which will immediately inform them if they make a wrong one.

And if that isn't enough, there are more than 5 MILLION accidents driving, compared to only 20 flying. And as more and more toys are introduced into cars, to keep their drivers more and more distracted, that number will no doubt increase.

The upgraded Panasonic screens are definitely an improvement on the FCA stuff, but you can't really compare a 2014 screen to a 2021 one, lol. I'm surprised you find it too bright though, you should be able to get it VERY dark, I keep mine extremely dark (updated Panasonic screen).

Fact is, driver training in the US is laughable at best and nonexistent at worst. We don’t teach people that they’re piloting 4,000lb or more of vehicle and they should be paying absolute attention to that task, nor do we punish screwing that up severely enough. Touchscreens are just the scapegoat, everyone thinks everyone else is a terrible driver except themselves.

I'll agree with that. They shouldn't drink and drive either, but they do. Everything you're saying proves that the bulk of drivers out there are distracted idiots. And the numbers back it up. And yet you can't comprehend that all of this electronic wizardry isn't adding to the problem? Cell phone use alone while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. Nearly 390,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting while driving. 1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving.

Distracted drivers are causing this, by not paying attention. And yet you can't understand that giving them more toys to distract them with, isn't going to cause a bigger problem? Come on. What's next, beer taps built into the counsel for DUI recipients?
